NHRA catered to a minority? Not really...if you watch the crowd after the 2 fuel classes run, they mostly vacate the stands to go spend money. I hate it but it's true...the majority of the fans at any given event are there to watch the two loud classes run and don't give a **** about the rest.NHRA knows who's buying the tickets...and the merchandise...when they catered to the two pro fuel classes, they were just looking at the bottom line....sad but true
Do you really believe that the fuel cars are all there is to it? If it wasn't for the sportsmen PAYING the way for the fuel cars,there wouldn't be any. They raised the entry fees for the sportsmen this year and the fields have dropped off because of it too. Keep on thinking the fuel cars are all there is to it and there won't be any races to go to.

Mike, we race S/C, so I'd love to be on your side. But the math doesn't work.
At a big national event, there might be 500 sportsman cars, and just to make the math easy, let's say they pay $300 a head to race (it's really about $270). That's $150k. At that same event, there might be 50,000 fans over the weekend, paying an average of $30 a head (again, rounded a bunch just to make the math easy) and that's 10 times as much money: $1.5m
The way I see it, the sportsman cover the technical costs of putting on the weekend, but the fans bring in the profit.
Again,you can't have one without the other.

The only reason the sportsman are there are to pad NHRA's pocket and they need somebody to fill in the down time between the pro's. I love all racing, hell my family bracket races all the time. However, the fuel cars are the reason the fans show up at national events. Take them away, and nobody would be there. Anybody who doesnt believe that, doesnt know our sport very well.

First let me say I race sportsman also.
But for the sake of argument. Lets just say EVERYONE is there for only the fuel cars and there are no sportsman at all.
The pits would be empty except for the fuel cars and 16 -20 pro stock. There would be no midway manufactures don't need to show as they give their stuff to pro teams. Less food trailers as not as many people. The food trailers count on sportsman racers and crew also. On the track there would be large time spans filled with what? and motorcycle jump or a guy that does wheelies. Or that A**hole that shoots T-shirts into the Empty stands. That would get old real soon.
Attendence would be good for a year or two then people would get tired of it.
There would be nothing to do between rounds, no 55 chevy, VW modified, SS/A Hemi Cuda to look at because no sportsman.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is YES the fuel cars fill the stands BUT when they are not running Spectators fill the pits and reminise over the 63 Chevy with the red interior that was similar to the old one they got laid in.
They line up at the food trailer for a Sausage, and they cruise the midway for a look at the new Ford or parts for there street ride or a old Funny car in some Manufactures pit.
So They do need sportsman If not for the on track stuff but to give everyone time to go Pee, Eat, View, Talk. and of course the added income that goes with all that.
Think of it like a Concert, we are the opening act generally because the main act although they would like to think so, Can't cover the show without us.
Unless he wins, WJ never misses an opportunity to complain. If it's really all that screwed up, why is he still running in the NHRA?
And while I don't wait with bated breath for his pronouncements and could have missed one, according to Johnson's own rants over the last few years, the big problems were engine buyers, the countdown and track prep for the fuel cars hazarding the pro stockers, not fuel cars going too fast and causing the tracks to spend money on the wrong places.
Frankly I don't find the curmudgeon act all that amusing anymore, if I ever did.

Unless I'm mistaken,I believe he won that round. I think it's very entertaining myself. Anybody's opinion about WJ is whether you like him or not but in this case support for his statements are very high. At least he has the nads to say something unlike the butt kissing fuel guys.

Then let's just get back to the 32 flopper and 32 fueler Shows...
16 Nitro cars and 16 Alky cars... fill the down time with jets, wheelstanders, ET Brackets, N/FC's, and be done with it.

You mean go back to the days when it was a show that featured a race? Did you ever see the Dump truck vs Jet Car race at OCIR? Or the Hydrogen Peroxide rocket cars, eight car field wheelie cars, people stayed in the stands for the bracket cars, give me a large coke and an order of strips? Those were some great times. I'm not sure you could make it work these days.
