WJ gave a great interview during the qualifying show. When asked about his future, he said it was uncertain, and he made no bones about his feeling about the current state of the sport, especially the outrageous costs in running PS. My hats off to him and Kurt, Kurt went a couple rounds and ran 6.58. Amazing what a difference in budget it takes to go from 6.58 to 6.53. But that's Pro Stock (actually almost all classes now). Also, congrats to the Johnsons who supply the power to Alan Ellis' A/AP that captured the Comp World Championship. Having had my dad run an A/A 40 years ago, we thought it was great that one finally sealed the deal for a championship, very impressive as to this day, those are still very unpredictable cars.

When I was at St Louis, I could have sworn they said over the PA system during Pro Stock qualifying that WJ had made a recent, large investment in all new CNC equipment and was on the cusp of making a big announcement of future plans.

Guess I was hearing things.

That would be great to hear, but he sure didn't seem optimistic during the interview I saw. Then again, he probably wouldn't even hint at something on TV unless it was a done deal. We'll see I guess...

Johnsons in Comp Eliminator?....I could go for that LOL.

I'm not a huge WJ fon but I think he really has a good analogy of the state of Pro-Stock. NHRA really needs to listen to what he has to say.

Does anybody know for sure what he meant by 250,000 rear ends ?

He also mentioned 200,000 worth of valve springs , and 200,000 worth of something else I've forgotten---

I've heard of rear housings going for $220,000 and have wondered what made them so crazy expensive. I'm thinking titanium, but there must be more than that to it ? Anybody have any pics ?

It's seems impossible that WJ can exit the sport graciously. If you are that negative about the sport that has been pretty good to you, maybe you should have stayed retired when "School was Out". Sounds more like not being competitive is what this is really all about. Hard to find sponsorship for the over sixty crowd for a class that has been stuck in a time warp the past 25 years. We need more stories like Ricky Jones instead of crotchety old men.

Randy I disagree. Ever hear Larry Morgan's take on the state of PS? The sport's been good to WJ but he's also been a huge part of Pro Stock's popularity for decades. The numbers don't lie, it costs what it costs to be competitive.

Absolutely. People have been doggin' Warren since the dawn of time for his attitude, which, by the way has been consistent (for the most part) no matter his level of performance.

What he said is dead-on whether anybody likes it or not, and is echoed by most of his peers. But as has been beat to death on here, most all of the classes, not just Pro Stock, have gotten completely out of control cost-wise.

Where I'm not a WJ fan, (too much "punk ass kid" + ex-employee bashing) I do listen to everything he has to say.
But that being said-what if this conversation was happening 20 years ago? What if it was some lower dollar team griping? About a certian team that had factory money-and was outspending all the other teams-and who's technology was making it too expensive to race? What team you think it would be aimed at?
Sometime you're ahead of the curve-sometimes you ain't.

Don't misunderstand me, I happen to like WJ. He has had a great career, but during his heyday, I'm sure some of the older racers thought he was crazy for spending what he was. Just don't badmouth everything because you don't want to play at the current rates. As for saying the stands are half empty, he is correct. They empty out when his class comes to the line. If it wasn't for the Nitro classes, a lot of non-nitro racers wouldn't have made the income they did. I don't think he has ever seen the "Big Picture" very clearly.

It's true PS is stuck but they only have so much downforce and not being able to add HP by the 500cu.in. they are forced use high RPM and special chassis and shock programs to get the edge. Therefore if you don't have finances you don't have that extra .050 advantage. WJ didn't mention the hollow titanium intake valves at $700.00 ea.

Major motorsports organizations failure to keep costs down is something that has hurt virtually every racing series on the planet. Someone could write a book about the failures. The NHRA should have been planning for sometime now to keep the costs in line with what major product brands are willing to pay. Know your sport, Know its viability and what it has to offer.
