Nice responce by WJ. Unfortunately the vast majority of fans will not see this interview, and ESPN probably won't mention anything about it. WJ is a smart guy, as it comes through in this interview. Too bad he just doesn't keep his mouth shut when the cameras get on him when he is all worked up.

I can see good points on both sides of the fence.
With the nitro cars running 1k' there not putting rubber down for the last 320' and that's what is causing the trouble for PS. NHRA needs to come up with a fix before we have the big one in PS.
Drag racing doesn't need another on.

I seem to recall his propensity to spout off at Bob G years ago. More often than not, he didn't have the car or driving ability to back it up though. WJ is definately a smart man and he definately has a valid point about track prep....just drop the back biting on the fuel classes...they ARE what draw the fans to the track. If there were no nitro classes, I would not be attending. Remember that brilliant fuel ban years ago? That sure was a good call.

I am troubled by Graham Light's response. He basically said Warren's suggestions won't be listened to because he didn't use PRO to make them. Since when did safety become a matter of going through "channels"? If someone has a good idea they shouldn't need to be a member of PRO or use PRO to present it to NHRA. PRO by it's self presents a problem because Top Fuel and Funny Car representatives out number the Pro Stock representatives. Even if Warren was to use PRO he is out numbered when it comes time to vote. There lies the problem since Top Fuel and Funny Car's are significantly out numbered when it comes to the break down of car types that actually participate at events. It's the tail wagging the dog.

IMO Graham Light doesnt do chit

Light halted the Pro Stock round, ran the Fuel Cars instead to drag compound further down the track and the problem and complaining subsided. Sounds like an appropriate response to me.

Well yea after the drivers said it was unsafe what would you do?

I agree with WJ on nearly every issue he listed..... especially this one....

“Absolutely -- because I think the same thing about them damn Fords,” he said. “You know what 'Ford' stands for. You're standing in front of the mirror in the morning. You're shaving. You got your Ford T-shirt on. You look at it. D-R-O-F. Oh yeah -- driver returning on foot.”

So I take it you aren't trying to get any FORD teams for your business? lol

Oh I welcome all makes and models to use our oil Toby...it works great in any car...even FORDS...;) and since my BOSS is a FORD FREAK (owns a Ford Mustang Top Sportsman car, towed with a new Ford Truck, and drives to work in "The Combust Mobile" Ford....) that was more of a jab at him...(since he spy's on me)

I just found that one funny as hell! And I think WJ is THE MAN!

I worked with WJ for damn near ten years. He has so many one liners I think once he gets done racing he will do stand-up comedy. I know its hard to believe for someone that only knows his racing on camera personality, but he is a pretty slick old fart. I really liked it when Pat Barrett was working for him. Inside the trailer it was like a stage scene from the movie 'Grumpy Old Men' It was hilarious. Pat I am sure you are lurking on here. I hope you are enjoying your boat.

BTW, if your BOSS is running nitrous on his car, have him look me up. I made a four stage nitrous controller and I want to get it out around the Denver area. I have a lot of cars using it but they are on the east coast.

Anybody else see the interview with Johnny Gray? Unless I was half asleep, I believe he said that he thinks Pro Stock cars are harder to drive.

From the few comments in this thread, I think we have another classic example of not being able to seperate the message from the messenger. If you don't like WJ as a person or competitor, fine. But to dismiss what he is saying out of hand because of that is a dangerous proposition.

Amen, brother! I agree with this post, word-for-word.

Great post, Greg. What's more troubling to me is the fact that Warren knows this and still won't go through the process because he feels that he's just outnumbered anyway. He has soooooooo much confidence in PRO that he felt like the only way to get the issue out there is to lash out.

Absolutley. I think it's everyone's responsibility to absorb information and respond to it only when you can do so in a non-emotional manner, which was not done in this case, unfortunately. On the flip-side, when that happens, it's also our responsiblity to recognize an emotion-triggered response and glean the message being sent rather than keep the fire going with yet more emotion.

Imagine that...............;)

Warren is saying what needs to be said. Spectator turnout down 30 to 50%? that's the sort of numbers that should get any corporate MBA pinhead into a big tizzy about their corporation!

I would suggest to Warren, that, in addition to exercise his Constitutional right to FREE SPEECH, and talking to the press, he should also formalize his concerns via the PRO avenues. His thoughts are more effective using both channels, instead of one or the other, which Light may be implying?

I think the racing press can serve a valuable and even life saving role in getting this debate aired out in public, so the best and brightest minds we have can add some substance to this important debate. Warren's comments about the type of gravel, the grooming and the capacity of the catch nets leave me flabbergasted. In light of all the recent top end deaths, you would think that the track would have been set up to maximize safety and use all available resources, such as the maximum length of available shut down?

There is a manager or group of managers within the track and NHRA (and maybe even public officials?) that made the decisions and gave the orders to the workers to use such nets and so on. I wonder if we the public will ever find out who they were?

To be fair-and-balanced, I should also ask if there were any racers that walked the track and voiced any concerns to officials about anything they considered deficient about safety?
