Why won't they treat the top end of the track for the Pro Stockers?

V said they'll be getting the Avenger out for the next few races. He said it's a good car, and they have a lot of data for it.

I thought I heard Mr Light say that a racer can bring out a new car during qualifications, but not during eliminations.
Yes, he is going to run his avenger. You can bring a new car out for eliminations if the race is postponed but, you can only bring a new car out during qualifying if the race is not postponed. This means you can't bring a new car out after the race has started unless it gets postponed.

From what I understand, and correct me if I'm wrong, but any kind of wing added to a PS car will add too much drag and slow them down. They don't have 10,000 hp engines like the nitro cars, which actually rely on down force to stay stuck to the track.

I'm curious..

What amount if wing is needed and how much would it slow them down? Is it something needed at all tracks or just certain ones or in certain conditions?

And how long do you think it will be before the top teams figure out the necessary additional power and compensate for the additional drag and numbers are back to where they are now?

Pro stock has become a case of "who do you buy your power from to be competitive". Gone are the days privateers building their own packages in the garage. Once all the cars get the same downforce ruling, you know that the big builders will be living at the dyno looking for that extra 50-100...

I've got a couple of friends, one in Pro Stock, one in Pro Mod, that both said the issue wasn't track prep, but the fact that the rubber was coming up off of the track in large pieces......along with chunks of the actual asphalt racing surface. No amount of track prep would fix that situation.

No, what needs to happen is for Bruton Smith to get off of his wallet, and completely re-do the racing surface from the burnout box to the sand traps at ZMax. It's sad that such an excellent facility should have such a crappy racing surface. Bruton needs to forget about the whole "Four Wide" deal, and do whatever is necessary, regardless of cost, to make ZMax as good as it should be for both the racers and fans. What happened yesterday was a huge black eye for the sport, and will hopefully never happen again.

The conversation of re-configuring the Pro Stock cars and class is one that I'm interested in, and will hopefully be explored in greater detail in a separate thread.

Excellent post and I couldn't agree with you more on all points. I'm just glad V. Gaines is okay!! We need more yabba dabba doo, and less cars on their lids.

Since Pro Stock is having difficulty fielding 16 cars and Pro Mod typically fields between 27-34 maybe they should make Pro Mod the new Pro Stock. I'm sure there are too many people who would be against it sure would be interesting.

My 2 cents. I do agree that probmodified should get its fair share of the spotlight, however I don't believe it should be at the lose if another class. I just don't think that would be fair

And to add to that.......

I'm not so sure that Pro Mod wouldn't have the same decline over time that we've seen Pro Stock have if it were thrust into the limelight. You make them a pro category and start giving them prime television air time, then they become more attractive to potential sponsors. Pretty soon, the influx of new money into the class allows costs to be taken to a new level, pushing teams out just like Pro Stock. Not saying that this is necessarily a bad thing, because it's not. But it would put the heat on the sanctioning body to get good at something they've not been historically good at, which is keep costs under control so history doesn't repeat itself.

Why replace a category that NHRA doesn't care about with another category that NHRA doesn't care about. Just a few years ago NHRA was talking about getting rid of Pro Mod. I'm not sure what has changed, but thankfully Pro Mod is still here. If it's about keeping fans in the seats, it won't happen, they still run to the grandstands for Nitro racing and then run right back to John Force's pit area when Nitro cars are done. Also, what exactly would you say to all the teams and sponsors that are currently invested in Pro Stock?

For as many rich guys that are running Pro Stock, there has to be at least 5 times as many REALLY GOOD lawyers working for them...

Johnny Gray alone could probably level NHRA with the lawsuits if P/S got the heave-ho

Nothing has really changed, the Pro Mod class funds itself. After Roger Burgess left (and AMS before him), there was no one funding the class so NHRA said if they didn't find someone to fund it, they would be dropped from the schedule. Folks stepped up with some money and they are still on the schedule. It costs NHRA nothing but time on the schedule to run those cars, as long as it stays that way we will get to see Pro Mods at National Events. It will take some serious lawyering on both NHRA's and the competitor's sides to get a Pro class added or dropped from the series at this point, so we are pretty much stuck with what we have for the foreseeable future ... and in my opinion, what we have is not that bad!
