I understand what she is trying to say. Yes to most of us this is an umimaginable crime but if you're culture you are raised in tells you differently?? Many countries eat dog, as well as many other foods deemed cross to us in the West. Do we condem them?
I'm not saying Vick deserves to get off easy or that anything he did was ok. It is wrong and he deserves to sit in jail for a little while.

To defend this guy (or anyone else) on 'cultural' differences seems to indicate that the person is not bright enough to figure out that the 'sport' is inflicting unbelievable pain and suffering on living creatures.
Sorry, that's not a plausible reason, to me. And besides.... it's illegal. Is that a cultural difference as well?

I would think more then just punishing one guy the goal would be to deter others from getting to this point. How does that happen? We need to understand what got him to this point. Being raised in and around it doesn't make it right of course but to understand that there are pockets of places in this country where it is ok should be alarming. I would think if you want to end these acts its best to know the enemy as a whole. As Jackie has pointed out several times, animal abusers tend to go on to become even bigger offenders in other areas of crimes. If you are going to stop something you need to get the the root of it. Its not a defense of Vick just a reason for it that hopefully leads to solutions to keep others from following that way.
We can look all around this country and see where cultural differences play out. Why is the the death penatly ok in one state and not another? How many chineese markets sell cats for food?

I agree with them being a role model, but I imagine it is difficult to be a role model when a lot of them didn't grow up having a role model to pattern their lives after. Now this is not an excuse for athletes behaving the way that they do, because all it takes is a decision and action to change your life and be the role model that Gary spoke about. We all didn't come from perfect families, and for those of us that didn't, we can change the generations to come if we choose to do so by becoming a better role model than what we had.
