Here's a "school" question for you guys in other states.

Do you all have to pay book rental fees for your children? I just don't get it. Growing up in Michigan, we didn't have to pay for the use of the textbooks. When we moved down here and it's apparently a state law. I about fell over Weds at registration, both kids are in middle school and the total was well over $300! I guess the thing that really gets me is the fact that we get no money back and we pretty much paid for the books. It just does'nt make sense.I'm interested in hearing from others.

once upon a time, ya had to buy your books in virginia... used textbook sells all through august... and in some classes the books were ten year different... '61(k)-'63(2)... when we got back to kali in early '64, ggusd supplied the books, and i was bumped ahead a year... that's how much better the virginia schools were...

d'kid

I'm not sure if it's a district by district thing, but here in Splendora, TX we do not pay fees for text books....only late fees for library books. Oh, have I mentioned my son can't turn a library book in on time to save his little 14 year old hiney?! ;)

I remember back in 7th-8th grade I had like 4 books overdue! They yanked my ass out of class to make sure I turned them in!;)

Dude! This little bitty town is soooo who you know and who you are. Dean gets away with murder (and I have to brag).....cuz parents and faculty love his little 'class clown' butt!

Kids here go back Sept. 2. Which means by the end of next week I'll be up to my eyeballs in school stories. The town I live has its own school district, which I cover, plus the town next door is in a different school district which I also cover.

I don't think either of the school districts I cover charge text book fees but I think I'm gonna check.

One district is Pay to Play, though, for sports while the other is not.

My boss mentioned back to school stories earlier this week and I was like, crap! I love summer. When school's out it allows me to focus on other things and gives me flexibility for other stories or breaking news (which we've had way too much of lately) plus the traffic's not nearly as bad. That's the best part. :D

No kiddos yet in my house. Be a whole new ball game when that happens.

Ick! My 45 mile work commute increases in time by a third if not double when school starts back!

Kelly, definitely ick for you.

My two mile commute doubles from 8 to 16 minutes when school starts. It's horrible. :p

I am sorry. I went from driving 25 miles one way to 10 and last fall they moved us into a satellite office (we were centralized for a long time) just a couple miles away.

I still have to drive by an elementary school in the morning no matter which way I go and that does slow things down. A little.

OK. I'll shut up now.

Just wait 'till they get to college.

I saw the bills from when my brother went to Loyola Chicago....OUCH! Thankfully he was on a full ride D1 basketball scholarship, so my parents didn't have to pay.

Feel for ya Kelly.. 30 miles from my front door to the little one's school, and another 5 miles for his big brother.. Some days are 140 miles on my drop-off/pick up schedule.. When gas was $2.89 I was cryin- now I'm just numb..

I remember always starting after Labor Day, and finishing around the first week of June. And whats with all the teacher service days they have now, and half days, and all this other stuff??

(BTW, I think school starts the 18th here.....)

My sister is a teacher & she said that every time the state raised teacher pay they also added days to the school calender...like their jobs aren't hard enough...

I think the kids in my neighborhood started today. The house across the street was lit up when I was taking the dogs out before work and all summer long the house has been dark.

"OHHHH back to school, back to school
to prove to Dad Im not a fool
Got my lunch packed up
my boots tied tight
hope i dont get into a fight"

Besides... doesn't tax-free weekend have to come first?

Tax free weekend?

Just wait 'till they get to college.

Yea I just finished up last year. Couple books were almost $300 a piece. You know you are getting ripped off when you are paying $250 for a used book, later selling it back for $80. wooohooo:rolleyes:

I can vouch for that. We have 2 in college at once & it brings new meaning to flat ass broke. As far as school starting, my wifes a teacher & her kids come Aug. 28th. Our kids start back to college mid Sept.

Yep. We get a weekend where clothing items and school supplies are tax free (see link for guidelines)! Oh, and this year they finally added backpacks....WOOHOO! LOL I have no idea why they haven't been included since they started this. What's the song? Oh, yeah....God Bless Texas!

A backpack is a pack with straps one wears on the back.
I just found this line defining a backpack funny. Would be nice if we had something here. Even that little bit helps.

Thats awesome!

Hey, in today's economy...every bit helps. In fact (sidebar), I recently have been testing my car on recirc A/C vs fresh air A/C. It always made sense to me it might be a little less harder on the A/C, but as an admitted smoker....I tend to lean toward fresh air A/C to keep my car 'cleaner' in the cabin. I have tested 2 tanks and I get 2.5 more miles a gallon on recirc. So, I went from just over 30 mpg to 32.5 (roughly) in the dead of summer. It's like getting an extra gallon every fill with my 13 gallon tank! Especially with my 90 miles a day commute.

So, every $8+ per $100 on school clothes/supplies is just money I can spend elsewhere.....LIKE VEGAS 2!
