I had a '96 C4 w/ LT4 and a 6 Speed that I absolutely LOVED. Fiance' at the time hated it ... that's how I wound up in a Jetta. Valuable lesson learned ...

With the economy as bad as it is ... the lots in Vegas are suddenly flooded with quality used Vettes up to and including Z06's. Part of me thinks if I wait a couple more months, I might be able to absolutely steal one.

EDIT: found a pic of my old Vette: (click for larger)

I have a 96 LT4 car--I sold it new and bought it back a few years later. The market is really soft right now. When I bought my 07, it had 900 miles on it. Guy bought it new and then decided he didnt need a vette. He lost $14k on it. The Z06 cars are taking a bigger hit partially because of the much anticipated ZR1. I guess there is a line of guys with too much money that dont remember all the money lost on the last ZR1's. When the older ZR1 came out, you had to also be a ZR1 dealer (with a special tool kit at a cost of about $10k) as well as a Chevy dealer. I was at a program car sale once and when a ZR1 came through, it was announced that you had to be a ZR1 to bid on the car. They said if you were not sure if you were a ZR1 dealer, they would call Detroit and check. The dealer next to me quipped "If you bought that $10k tool kit, I doubt you would forget about it".

it wouldn't surprise me if you see a shift in Pro Stock to the big 3 pony cars assuming they all get here. This is what they sell, Not the altered shaped bubbles with mailboxes on their hoods....

They have already started with Mopar and Ford with their stock and super stock cars.... Hey wait aminute, isn't that how it all started all those years ago??????

Guys, it's not only GM and Pro Stock. Next year is going to be tougher than anybody expected. I wouldn't be surprised to see many races where you won't have 16 car filds in the Pro categories. It is just plain ugly out there from a business perspective. Factory orders (and I'm not talking GM) are down 50% in many cases. Money for sponsorships will be very tight.

..............And whoever said my Jetta was more expensive than a comparable American car is dead-stone wrong. I have a 5 speed, 1.8L turbo, upgraded stereo and interior. You would be hard pressed to get a Cobalt or Focus for what I paid for the Jetta. You probably could get a Cobalt or Focus, but is not going to be comparable in amenity, fun, technology, comfort nor resale. And a Cobalt/Focus certainly won't have 180HP and get 30MPG highway...................
Go drive an SRT4 Caliber before you make that claim.

285hp and 31mpg highway.

I think its time for the BIG 2(Dodge being the odd one) to rethink this whole "we need to make 5 brands off one platform" "and own 20 diff brands" crap and go back to basics. Whats wrong with just Chevy, Ford and Dodge each having 3-5 cars and a 3-5 trucks/suv's?

I heard on the radio yesterday that G.M. was the largest purchaser of
Viagra. 17 Million was the figure I heard.

And I want to bail them out so that their work staff can get some "wood"?

If you look at our Jim Yates 400 story, I think we can start to gain a feel of who will remain if GM pulls back or Heaven forbid pulls out.

Drag Racing Internet Magazine - Competition Plus.com - YATES REFLECTS ON 400

here is what Jim is saying. Read between the lines and you get the point it is not good

“I believe Pontiac has the best car out here,” Yates said. “If I wasn’t getting any money from anybody, I would be racing a Pontiac because I think it’s the best car right now. You have to think of it this way, things may change things may slow down next year, GM will comeback. We’d like to be there when they come back. There’s something to be said about supporting someone consistently over the years.

. . . I am in the market for a new car, and 2 American cars made the cut. A used 05/06 Vette (natch) or a new Pontiac G8 GT/GXP (OK ... so technically it's Australian).
I concur with others who have agreed "Get the Vette!" My average mileage is over 27 MPG and it'll out perform just about anything anywhere.

As far as bailing out the big three automakers, I say don't do it unless they restructure their labor packages. Why continue to support a system that makes us compete with twice the labor costs of foreign manufacturers? I know there are union members just chomping at the bit to tell me how they are superior but I'll respectfully disagree. It's my opinion that the unions have swung their pendulum way to far. There are lots of unemployed or underemployed workers in the USA who would love to give an honest day's work for less than 1/2 what the UAW currently mandates from the big three. It's only my opinion, and it seldom counts around here but consider it stated.

Bobby is spot on about UAW. It is time for the unions to rethink their strategies and relationships with the big three. Times have changed and the unions have put the big three at a significant cost disadvantage and maybe into bankruptcy. JMO, I think unions are worthless and unnecessary, the only thing they do is add another layer of complexity and costs to a business.

YES, YES, YES!!!

Unions had their time and place, but as a whole, they need to be history. Through administrative costs alone, they cannot be quantified and they have consequently resulted in over-center labor costs as they're applied to the cost of the products they produce, as well as the ultimate formation of employees that believe they're owed something every time a contract comes up. Not all, but many. In the small town I'm from alone, we've had several high paying facilities close their doors the past several years and they were all union shops. Can you say "What comes around, goes around"?

I'm a springmaker by trade. It's taken close to 20 years to get to the level I'm currently at, but make about 40% less than the run-of-the-mill line worker at any given automotive plant.................not skilled trades, I'm talking general laborers. General labor jobs that any one of us can be trained to do in several hours, to a few days at most, yet if the roles were reversed, those same people would take years to get to where I'm at. And these are the same people that want everyone to piss, moan and join their pity party when they're out on the picket lines refusing to work because they can't get a raise or benefit increase that is already 40% better than mine or more. It makes me want to laugh and puke at the same time, if that's possible.

Like I said before, it's all coming full circle and I'm glad to see it. And all I can say to the Big-3 is, "How's that workin' for ya'?" ;)

Bobby, I love your car & just had to put it up there again.

I really can't contribute to the opinion on unions, because while I have my opinion, I cannot express it. Bad or good.

However, when a group of people have an average hourly wage of $85.00 plus benefits when the rest of the country is at less than half that, there is definitely an issue.
