What Happened to COPART

they are still listed on nhra.com as 'official online vehicle auction of nhra'

good question actually whether or not we'll see involvement with a team/s.

I seem to remember Kenny saying that CoPart agreed to release them from the sponsorship deal when he decided it was time to retire. It's still early in the winter break. Who knows, you may see them as an associate on some car, perhaps Brandon's new MLR ride.

...And they seemed to enjoy their experience/exposure in drag racing. I'm sure alot of that had to do with KB's professional representation of their company.

Since it is NHRA, It would not surprise me if they stole Copart from KB and he was so fed up he quit because of it.

It would not be the first sponsor they stole

Just a thought!

If you listened to John Kernan's podcast with Brandon, Brandon says it wasn't Coparts fault, but the fact that their associate sponsors departed. That, and the fact that Kenny just hasn't been enjoying racing nearly as much for the past couple of years are the main reasons behind Kenny's decision to throw in the towel.

Here's a link to John's post. Listen for yourself.

when you lose your big longtime sponsor a few years ago, it does kinda take the bloom off the rose. If Budweiser stuck around, things would maybe have been different IMHO.

I would imagine not winning a race in forever would make "throwing in the towel" a little easier.

Kenny has done this for a long time and I can see why he would want to just kick back and enjoy the rest of his life. But in a perfect world I could see a Bernstein and Prudhomme Indy car team.:D

Hey John, since you've publicly accused the NHRA of stealing sponsors, perhaps you can provide us with some specific examples. Facts only please, not rumors.

Since Kenny stipulated that Copart agreed to let him out of the commitment, what is it you base your foolish allegations on?

Sponsor Stealing

The rumors of NHRA stealing sponsors has been around for a long time. I'm assuming that it has something to with NHRA's efforts to ATTRACT sponsors for race teams. I haven't verified this with an NHRA rep so if someone can corroborate I would appreciate it.

NHRA had in place, and presumably still does, a requirement that a company wanting to become a major sponsor of the series, with exception of the series sponsor, be at least an associate sponsor on a team. The idea would be to ensure that the teams receive the support they need so they can actually show up at the sponsor's events. The "stealing" comes in when the sponsor completes its contract with the team but continues to sponsor an event. This would explain why so many companys show up on a car at the same time as or prior to showing up as an NHRA sponsor.

If this is not the stance of the NHRA, it should be. This is a good idea.

Tony, I have heard rumblings for years that be careful who you tell about a possible sponsor! I'm not gonna mention Names or sponsors, but I know of one case where a Rumored sponsor of a FC team back around 10 years ago was pursued by NHRA marketing, and told they would get Far more ROI sponsoring a couple of Natl. Events than a car! The Sponsor pulled out...

Didn't Virgil Hartman speak on this subject years ago?

Kenny sold a lot of bad beer for a lot of years. Was it a cut back or did they finally get tired of his act? Rude, nasty, and mean when the mic or cameras were turned off. Copart might not have got the ROI or didn't want to put up with the B.S. no matter what the press releases said.

What part of this is so hard to understand? Copart would have still been a sponsor if Kenny had wanted to continue racing. They agreed to let him out of his deal when he decided to retire and quit drag racing.

Yeah, but the "rude, nasty, and mean" part is undeniable. That was certainly my experience...
