What happened here ???

From NHRA qualifying round 1 :
Smith's car drifted out of the groove and toward the center line as he neared the finish. Smith crossed the center between 1,000 feet and 1,320 feet, so this run was disqualified and he gets a five point penalty
Smith did not run other qualifying round. HOW DID HE MAKE FIELD ???

It was a mistake, crossing the center line before the finish-line is a DQ, crossing between the 1000' and the 1320' is a penalty, but not a disqualification.
