I do have ONE complaint from both Sunday and Monday.
But it is towards the ATTENDEES and not the sanctioning body.
On both days I witnessed during the National Anthem and the invocation prayer SEVERAL people around me that either did not stand (although later they had no problems standing for the beer vendor) or did not remove their hat during the moment. In some cases, I saw both. And not just by the men, but by women as well.
What the hell is wrong with people? This is a simple showing of respect, and I thought it was just one ignorant spectator, but then I noticed more on Monday. It made me angry that these people were so disrepectful; this is simple elementary school stuff.
martin, odd you bring that up.....was just entering bleachers @ BIR when anthems (canada & usa) were just starting so stood in
front of bleachers with a large group who were also just entering....i am not a cap wearer but was that day due to cold temps....immediately
removed and glanced up into 30 row high bleachers just behind me (wondering how many hats i mite see)........did not see one single hat and as far as i could tell all were standing. (for both anthems).....looked across track and did not see one hat on other side either.
us nordern folk must have all made it thru 6th grade!
When Emmett was driving the junior car, I didn't strap him in until after the flag flew and the anthem had been played. He would stand in the cockpit, helmet in hand, his little brother on his left side and me on his right.
They got it. Because I taught them it is the right thing to do.
I had the honor of standing with PJ and Big Zappy during the anthem on Saturday. We were in front of the Nitro Mall, but we still were able to see and face the flag, and hats were removed.
I don't necessarily agree with religion or what most people think it means to be a patriot but I do bow my head during the invocation and take my hat off for the national anthem out of respect.
I almost never wear a hat but did once at a outdoor event and when the national anthem played I stood but it never crossed my mind that I was wearing a hat. I can tell you I was embarrassed when I realized I was wearing a hat through the national anthem.
I believe it's proper to remove a hat if worn, place your hand over your heart, face the flag, if a flag is not displayed (or not visible from where you are)
then you face the source of the music. That's what I was taught, and that's how I raised my kids.
I'm friends with Mark Rebilas on Facebook and noticed that you were too, so I had seen your picture before. Sorry I didn't bring it up earlier, we could've shot the bull for a while!
Not sure if you will be out in Vegas, but I'm taking the Kalitta corporate jet out and will be there the entire weekend! I'll be out on the starting line for one of the qualification runs, but should be in the hospitality area the rest of the time. Stop by, would love to meet you and catch up.
I wish that was the case Jesse! I was just a contributor to Jim O's book that's coming out soon, and as a result I get the pleasure of flying out to Vegas with Doug and spending the weekend with the team.
