What's this Prof. Ring stuff? You can call me Professor Dave (like people at the drags do) or Ring, like my students who've gotten past my first class do and that's only if they don't say it in a disrespectful way, but Professor Ring, now that's reserved only for the freshmen.

On the other hand I do appreciate the attempt at being respectful-that's a good characteristic of people from the Midwest as opposed to those of us from NY! You know how we do CPR in NY? We say "Don't just lie there, get the blank up!" Needless to say, I find the Midwest approach to life much better!

Thank you Professor Dave! The use of the terms comes from coming from a long line of educators. My Grandmother was a teacher, my mother and father were both teachers, and of course, I became a teacher. I taught high school English and Speech for 23 years before moving into the august world of graphic design and web design for a manufacturing firm (quite a reach, eh?) The hardest part of starting teaching, after 13 years of having my father as the superintendent of the school I attended was always looking around for dad when the students called me Mr. Larsen....and you are correct--the please, thank you, excuse me gets ingrained into us very young. Unfortunately, so do the racial terms used by parents who have really no idea of what they are speaking of. Other than that, it's not too bad out here! But part of my upbringing taught me that it is somewhat disrespectful to refer to people by only their last name, so since we both possess multiple degrees (I have an Allbut degree--you know---I have my doctorate allbut my dissertation!) I would be honored to go with Dave and Terry!

Terry,

It's not the middle of the country that has the racial term problem, but fortunately, it seems we have been making progress on that for a long time. What happened last week at the polls is not something new or an accident. I think the real progress started during WWII when people like the Tuskegee airmen demonstrated to doubting whites just what African-Americans could do in terms of covering their butts. And then Truman (a midwesterner if memory serves me well) said it was time to end segregation in the military (and the military has probably been more progressive when it comes to race relations than any other organization in the country), and the country was off to the races when it came to making racial progress. And of course I'm proud to be a fan and competitor in the motorsport where our timing systems are unable to ascertain the gender or race of any of its competitors.

I'd say I'm sorry if I got up on a soapbox, but I'm not. Not matter who anyone voted for we all should be very proud of the fact that our country was the first major Western democracy to elect a person of color as its chief executive. And from the very first time he spoke on the national stage, he reminded us we don't live in red states or blue states, we live in the UNITED STATES! And as Lee Greenwood sings, I'm proud to be an American!

What the professor said!!!!:) And I'm also proud to be involved in one of the few motorsports that didn't have to have the "diversity initiative" or whatever Nascar and others are calling it. Drag Racing has been diverse from its inception and racing with other races (did I really say that? hmm kinda clever? No? ok) and other genders has always been so commonplace in drag racing that no one ever thought it worthy of mention. And I'm proud of that
