I saw in the paper the other day, and it was breifly mentioned in the OP article that the inventor of Hot Wheels, Elliot Handler had passed away. I don't think any other sponsor at the time (Or even since.) got a better ROI than he did.

That's probably true.
 
In 1968, my twin brother and I bought a Hot Wheels track set and a couple of cars. Then we decided that the Hot Wheels were kid's stuff (we were 14 years old) and moved on to girls and sports and the like. Now, I have over 500 of the little critters and maybe someday I will come across a Snake or Mongoose flopper. Either one would look nice on my cherry Track Box drag strip...
