The Fort Dix Six

Homeland Security: News that a New Jersey store clerk helped the FBI foil a plan to kill soldiers on U.S. soil proves that alert citizens can disrupt a major terror plot — if they know what to look for.
Luckily the clerk did. One of the terror suspects paid him to burn onto DVD a video of several bearded men shouting "Allahu Akbar!" (Allah is great!) as they fired high-powered weapons at targets in the woods.
The clerk instantly suspected they were Muslims training for jihad, and tipped off the FBI. Agents, in turn, conducted surveillance over the next 16 months on what proved to be a terror cell targeting Fort Dix, the U.S. army base in New Jersey.
The homegrown plot was foiled. But we have to wonder if authorities would have ever uncovered it if not for the clerk's valuable tip.
These would-be terrorists slipped up. Though inspired by al-Qaida, they aren't disciplined foot soldiers. They aren't the sleeper cells lying in wait for a spectacular attack. They're homegrown, living for years in New Jersey's large Muslim community.
But like al-Qaida, they believe in jihad. They picked Fort Dix because it was convenient. One suspect's family owns a pizza parlor near the base and delivered to soldiers there.
He knew the base "like the palm of his hand," according to the FBI affidavit, and provided his Muslim "brothers" a map. The first thing they planned to attack was the power grid. They cased the base using cell phone cameras. Take note, citizen jihad watchers.
They didn't train in Pakistan, but at open shooting ranges in the Poconos and fields in their neighborhoods, where they conducted tactical exercises using paint-ball gear. They tried to acquire RPGs and AK-47 machine guns to "kill as many soldiers as possible."
They also watched jihad videos from Iraq, including one showing a Marine injured by a bomb. Seeing his arm blown off, the suspects burst into laughter, the affidavit says. These are the types of people we're dealing with. And they live among us — still. Only six of the 13 who trained in the Poconos are behind bars.
Most of the six are ethnic Albanians, including a former sniper in the Kosovo army. At least three are here illegally. In 1999, the Clinton administration opened up Fort Dix to 4,000 Muslim refugees from Kosovo. The base even broadcast calls to prayer for them.
This is how some show their gratitude.
Now we're inviting Afghan and Iraqi refugees to live here, too.
The Fort Dix Six also watched videos of Osama bin Laden calling Muslims to jihad. They studied the last wills and testaments of two of the 9/11 hijackers, which also recently were released by al-Qaida's propaganda wing and broadcast on al-Jazeera.
Clearly it's having an effect. It is inexcusable that al-Qaida leaders are still able to inspire jihadists from their secure base in Pakistan.
Though the terrorists may not look like the Arab stereotype, the general profile remains: young, male and, above all, Muslim.
These homegrown terrorists are trying to replicate the jihad they see in Iraq by attacking troops here. So we'll not just have to fight them over there, but over here as well.
But Democrats are making it harder for law enforcement to do their job. The FBI put informants in the homegrown cell and secretly recorded incriminating conversations. If CAIR had found out, they'd have raised a stink and the case may have died.
This is the effective homeland security apparatus the Democrats hope to dismantle.
