STEVENS TAKES OUT NITRO CHAMPS TO KEEP TOP ALCOHOL CHAMPIONSHIP ALIVE

Drag Racing star Brett ‘The Boss’ Stevens has kept his hopes alive of taking out the Australian Top Alcohol Championship when he was able to take maximum points with a striking performance at the Nitro Champs on the weekend (4th-5th May).

Driving his 3500 horsepower Kitten Car Care Products Funny Car at the Western Sydney International Dragway, Stevens went about demolishing the field in a stunning display that included a personal best 5.59 second pass at 257mph (413kph) over the quarter mile strip.

The end result netted Stevens a victory and 110 points in the chase for the Top Alcohol Championship, narrowing the gap on current leader Wayne Newby to just 35 points with only one round left to contest.

“We really had to go for it this weekend, to be a chance at the Championship we needed every point possible which is what we achieved,” Stevens said.

“The pressure was really on us from qualifying though when we were unable to put down a number on the first two runs due to electrical gremlins.”

“But after getting that sorted we were unstoppable, I picked up the high MPH and low ET bonus points with a personal best run in the quarter-final when I eliminated current leader Wayne Newby and I knew then the event was ours for the taking.”

“It all comes down to the Winternationals in June now, I am still in second position at the moment but the margin is so small it can go either way. I can’t wait!”

The Brett Stevens Racing team also competed in the Top Bike bracket at the event with Stevens and team mate Troy McLean aboard their Jack Daniel’s Nitro Harley’s.

Stevens Top Qualified with 6.58 second pass but was eliminated by McLean in the semi-final when his drive chain sprocket was stripped of all its teeth when he hit the throttle.

McLean then went on to take home the runner up trophy and consolidate his second position in the Australian Top Bike Championship

“I had some issues in qualifying spinning the tyre on the start line and I wasn’t able to put down a time that I was happy with,” McLean said.

“I was still able to put myself in 4th position going into the elimination rounds, but with Brett (Stevens) in the top spot it meant that we had to face off in the semis.”

“I got through that round with a win but lost the final to Perth ’s Mark Drew. However this result means I now have really good chance of finishing second in the Championship as well.”

The Brett Stevens Racing team will next be on track for the finale of the Australian Drag Racing Championship at Queensland ’s Willowbank Raceway at the Winternationals from 8th–10th June 2007.
