Matt Smith debuted his new in-house Kelly Campbell built Buell this weekend in Brainerd, Minnesota at the Lucas Oil Nationals. Hoping to run well with his new bike and his new flamboyant paint job by Brian Olson, Smith dominated the event.

Qualifying in the No. 1 spot on Saturday with a 6.958 et, Smith looked good heading into raceday. However after battling a kidney stone for the last week, Smith checked himself into the hospital as soon as the final session was complete on Saturday.

“I am in some pain for sure right now,” said Smith. “The doctor told me I had 10 kidney stones last night. They gave me lots of fluids, so hopefully the pain will ease up a bit before eliminations.”

Still fighting the pain, Smith went into first round on Sunday thinking of winning and winning only, and that he did. Taking out local favorite Jim Underdahl first round, Craig Treble second round, David Hope in the semi’s and Angelle Sampey in the finals when her bike would not fire, Smith found himself in the winner’s circle for his third win of the year.

Running in the sixes on three of four runs today, Smith dominated the field just as he has done so many other times the last few years. The 2007 NHRA POWERade Champion looks to be on the same path as last year, right to the top.

“This is awesome,” said Smith. “To come here with a new bike and to fight 10 kidney stones the whole weekend is just awesome. We brought the bike out in order to get it sorted before Charlotte, so it seems like we are on the right path and I am very happy with how it ran this weekend. I’m going home to rest now and get ready for Reading.”

Smith sits second in the standings, trailing Andrew Hines by 12 points as the Pro Stock Motorcycle’s head to Reading, Pennsylvania this weekend.
