I sent a letter to the editor. It probably won't be published as I am not from that area but I feel better now that is is sent. Hopefully it will at least open some eyes...
It is with dissapointment that I read the initial perceptions of some of your community members in regards to the proposed raceway park. I do understand the concerns about noise, traffic, and pollution, however a properly designed and managed facility can do much to improve the community without disturbing the traditions and expectations of your residents.
I'm just a regular 48 year old guy from Maine and around my area we have the same concerns whenever there is mention of motorsports. We also really strive to improve our environment.
A motorspor facility can reduce the street racing and speeding on your local roads and highways, provide a place for people to go and meet in an alcohol free environment which is very important not only for safety but to provide a place for our young adults to go.
Motorsport facilities offer a place where people can compete and show their vehicles as opposed to driving town streets, parking and creating a public nuisance of themselves, and generally being a problem for the public.
Noise issues may be resolved by a "good neighbor" policy with fencing and foliage, and with established times and curfues for events. Also many facilities have successfully implemented decibel meters to prevent unwarrented sound from becoming a problem for their communities.
The polution from the isolated instances of competition is often less than with regular passenger vehicles as in general the motors are better tuned and more efficient. The people who compete at these events are also some of the true innovators of technologies that make vehicles not only perform better but become more efficient. Most racers are extremely concerned with miles per gallon and efficient transporation of their vehicles to and from the track. Plus many of the performance enhancements actually improve gasoline mileage. Less gas burned equates to less pollution out the tailpipe.
Visitors and spectators are a wonderful source of revenue for the community through lodging, gifts, souvineers, dining, and visiting the attractions in your area.
I notice your law enforcement department has a special Police Activity League and the vision and goals of this league align perfectly with the goals of a professionally operated race facility.
The following is taken directly from the PAL website:
"MISSION STATEMENT:
Atwater PAL is to provide a common meeting grounds for police, citizens, and the youth of the City of Atwater and Merced County in the area of social, educational, and recreational activities in order to foster and encourage said youth, faith in American principles and in the traditions of sportsmanship, good will and friendship.
VISION STATEMENT:
Impacting the lives of young people and reducing juvenile crime by offering alternatives and positive self-esteem building experiences through sports and educational activities."
In closing I would like to say that I seek out communities that have racing facilities when I travel as I have found the racing community to be an honest and giving group of people where I always feel welcome. I urge you to seriously consider the benefits such a facility can offer your community before just saying no.
Thank you,
