Thats one person who has never been to a race in her life !!!! unfortunately one is the start to an army of the uninformed!! On another note, are you going to the pri show Jackee???

In a time when people even try to stop the building of churches, stores, and even houses, it's no surprise. I'll write something up.

Jackee, Thanks for the link to the uninformed writer to that newspaper. What is she thinking, that racetracks have events every day of the week? She wrote that it would cause traffic jams on their roads preventing people from getting to work, etc. Yeah right! Maybe for a few hours on weekends when there actually are big race events. I am very familiar with that area as I had a brother who lived in Merced for about 10 years, and he was so glad to get out of there due to not having ANYTHING much going on! He would drive to the Bay Area on weekends for entertainment, and I suspect many others have to as well. Merced, CA and the surrounding communities such as Atwater have nothing but agriculture going on there, so a facility such as Riverside Motorsports Park could be huge boost to the local economy as well as providing some new jobs. Racetracks do not add to polution, at least not in any significant numbers. I agree with the writers statement that roads (not freeways) would have to be improved for access to and from the racetrack, but NO WAY would new freeways be built just because of a racetrack!

A reply would carry a lot more weight if it were to come from somebody in the local area. Maybe a farmer that races that could explain the benefits $$$$ to the County, kids off the street kind of thing. Just thinking out loud..............

I sent a letter to the editor. It probably won't be published as I am not from that area but I feel better now that is is sent. Hopefully it will at least open some eyes...

It is with dissapointment that I read the initial perceptions of some of your community members in regards to the proposed raceway park. I do understand the concerns about noise, traffic, and pollution, however a properly designed and managed facility can do much to improve the community without disturbing the traditions and expectations of your residents.

I'm just a regular 48 year old guy from Maine and around my area we have the same concerns whenever there is mention of motorsports. We also really strive to improve our environment.

A motorspor facility can reduce the street racing and speeding on your local roads and highways, provide a place for people to go and meet in an alcohol free environment which is very important not only for safety but to provide a place for our young adults to go.

Motorsport facilities offer a place where people can compete and show their vehicles as opposed to driving town streets, parking and creating a public nuisance of themselves, and generally being a problem for the public.

Noise issues may be resolved by a "good neighbor" policy with fencing and foliage, and with established times and curfues for events. Also many facilities have successfully implemented decibel meters to prevent unwarrented sound from becoming a problem for their communities.

The polution from the isolated instances of competition is often less than with regular passenger vehicles as in general the motors are better tuned and more efficient. The people who compete at these events are also some of the true innovators of technologies that make vehicles not only perform better but become more efficient. Most racers are extremely concerned with miles per gallon and efficient transporation of their vehicles to and from the track. Plus many of the performance enhancements actually improve gasoline mileage. Less gas burned equates to less pollution out the tailpipe.

Visitors and spectators are a wonderful source of revenue for the community through lodging, gifts, souvineers, dining, and visiting the attractions in your area.

I notice your law enforcement department has a special Police Activity League and the vision and goals of this league align perfectly with the goals of a professionally operated race facility.

The following is taken directly from the PAL website:

"MISSION STATEMENT:

Atwater PAL is to provide a common meeting grounds for police, citizens, and the youth of the City of Atwater and Merced County in the area of social, educational, and recreational activities in order to foster and encourage said youth, faith in American principles and in the traditions of sportsmanship, good will and friendship.

VISION STATEMENT:

Impacting the lives of young people and reducing juvenile crime by offering alternatives and positive self-esteem building experiences through sports and educational activities."

In closing I would like to say that I seek out communities that have racing facilities when I travel as I have found the racing community to be an honest and giving group of people where I always feel welcome. I urge you to seriously consider the benefits such a facility can offer your community before just saying no.

Thank you,

Dear Editor,

I am writing in rebuttal to Myra Vasquez’s letter stating what she believes to be reasons why Riverside Motorsports Park should not be built. Sadly, Myra’s reasons show her total lack of knowledge at best and/or complete ignorance at worst of what the impact of such a facility would have on the Merced/Atwater area.

The idea that the Park would cause hearing damage for the areas residents is completely unfounded and it is sadly laughable that Myra could believe such a thing. Riverside Motorsports Park has taken noise into consideration and designed the facility to mitigate as much noise as possible. To add scientific weight to the argument, OSHA has set the standard of 8 hours per day at a weighted average of 85 decibels before an occupational hearing protection program is required. A common household generates decibels levels in the 60-80 dB range. I challenge Myra to provide documentation that shows the sound levels outside any raceway that exceed 85 dB.

The idea that the Park would “take away from our agricultural economy” again shows a lack of even basic knowledge of the project or the types of operations/events that will take place at the facility. There will be no freeways that need to be built and an increase in local traffic will only occur during the biggest events.

I would ask Myra Vasquez to provide a list of pending projects she approves of that would have as great an economic impact with minimal inconvenience to the Merced/Atwater area as Riverside Motorsports Park would. I’m pretty sure that list will be very small or non-existent.

Sincerely,

Greg Stanley

Wow! Well done, Greg! (and Ted as well) A well-written and persuasive missive that should raise eyebrows in the target audience. Thanks for standing up so well for all of us

Thanks, Guys!

Terry Larsen, where at in Nebraska? I went to high school in the southeast corner, Falls City. We still have a farm outside Stella and my brother lives in Lincoln.

Hi, Greg! So you are a former "East Coast" Nebraskan, huh? I live in south central NE near Wilcox, a town about the size of Stella, I think. Wilcox is pretty much south of Kearney, and I work in Holdrege at Allmand Bros. Inc. I'm the EBusiness manager. Neat to meet a former Nebraskan on the 'mater! Check out the state of your college team thread in the lounge if you haven't yet--we're having a lot of fun with the college matchups there. Let me know some more about your business and your racing! Keep in touch

I always look to Greg when something needs to be said properly and a point made professionally with facts to back them up. Greg is the best at it I know of anywhere.

How about a 4 link Dragster Greg? I'm over the roadster thing. Just looking into my future.
