What would you do if you were the decision maker at NHRA ( no hidden innuendos here please) and the weather forecast is not good, like they are facing this weekend.? Would you call the race for this weekend as early as today or would you try to wait, incurring all the additional problems that go along with that.

Great question Ron!!!

It goes a long way to illustrate that for all the second-guessing and belly-aching that goes on here ... very few would actually want to be the decision maker in a situation such as the NHRA is facing now.

If I were the Grand Poohbah of NHRA, I would wait out the weather this weekend for a couple of reasons. First of all there are no guarantees when it comes to weather, it may clear up and there is no reason to believe it will be better next weekend. Besides, as has been mentioned, weathermen suck. Secondly, the NHRA is the main feature in the motorsports world this weekend ... next weekend Joe Sixpack only cares about the Daytona 500. Lastly, everyone is already there, if you are truly trying to save the racers money, you cannot give them another week of expenses without making every effort to get it done this weekend.

Is the forecast for rain all weekend?

it is now. Original forcasts had Sunday as being dry, but now it is updated as being wet as well.

Talk about a complex series of storms. Rainfall totals have been very impressive, more than I thought would
collect. The cold front hit that moistened easterly flow..which started out dry in the am, and the cold air aloft made a mini squall
line wth towering cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds. This complex grazed the valley areas with heavy rain. A few claps of
thunder occurred yesterday, and today, there should be more. Snow levels will drop down to around the 4000’ foot level, thus a
winter storm warning has been issued by the NWS, and justifiably so. It appears February is trying to catch up from January’s
loss. The long wave trof is in place and is sycronizing. That means it is stuck in this pattern, until high pressure wedges in,
squeezing out this pattern the east, which I do not see at all in the extended.

Wait it out. Moving stuff around costs a bunch. What I would like to see tho is part of that "not-for-profit" money being given as either a partial refund of entry fee to help out those who stay, or maybe hotel vouchers to discount the rates of the teams that wait it out...

I guess it is good that there is a couple of weeks in the schedule. Maybe run the complete event next weekend?

The best scenario for the racers would be to have the sportsman guys done by Sunday and run the pros on Monday/Tuesday. The best scenario for the fans(and NHRA's pocketbook) would be pros only on Saturday/Sunday and let the sportsman guys run on Monday/Tuesday.

My assumptions are that today is a wash, a 40% chance of being able to race tomorrow, with Sunday looking pretty good to get a full day of racing in.

Taking those into account here is what I would do. Stock, Super Stock, Super Gas, Comp, and TA/FC are done with qualifying. If there were extra cars in those classes who chose not to run the first session they could be inserted at the bottom of the ladder based on last years points IF the field hasn't been filled yet. On Saturday,if there is a 3 to 4 hour window to race, I'd start with TA/D qualifying followed by the first pro session. Then I'd run the first round of S/G, S, S/S. If possible, I would run the 2nd and final session of pro qualifying. That would end Saturday.
As soon as engines are allowed to be fired on Sunday, I'd start with the 1st round of Comp, then Rd 1 of TA/FC and TA/D, followed by round 1 of the pros. A round of S/G, S, S/S followed by the pros round 2, then round 2 of Comp and the alcohol cars. The schedule would then just follow that pattern from that point on trying to finish the race on Sunday before curfew if possible, otherwise run the remaining elims on Monday.

I don't think they can run Nitro in Pomona on any days except the the eight that are already set. Miss a day and it is lost. Might be able to get them to set up a new weekend.

This happened in either 2003 or 2004. The whole event was rained out and we went back the next weekend. I want to say they called it on Friday or Saturday.

They called the Richmond race in 2006 on saturday at 1pm. Then came back the next weekend.

Wait until tomorrow A.M. If the rain continues, call it and reschedule for next weekend. Would not even consider running into Monday/Tuesday. This is the first race of the season, you have an open weekend (the Pacific National Open not even a consideration in my decision), and their really isn't any reason to have to try and squeeze the race in.

It's a "no win" for those who have to make the decisions.

Extending the weekend is bad for some.
Pushing back one week is bad for others.
Delaying things by two weeks is a problem for other groups.

Best case scenario, get in a full day of qualifying tomorrow then run the full eliminations schedule on Sunday.

Let's see how close "wishful thinking" comes to matching "stark reality".
