Quarterfinals Finish Moves Rowe to Second in IHRA Standings

MARTIN, Mich. (Aug. 6, 2006) - It looks as if the eMax Drag Racing Series' 2006 IHRA Pro Mod championship will be a hard-fought fight to the finish among a number of drivers. If that turns out to the case, Danny Rowe should be right in the thick of the action.

Sunday at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, Rowe took another step toward a possible IHRA title by winning a pivotal first-round race against Quain Stott and advancing to the quarterfinals of the IHRA Northern Nationals. Although his day ended in that round with a loss to eventual runner-up Mike Castellana, Rowe leapfrogged over Stott to assume second place in the IHRA Pro Mod points standings and also cut his deficit to points leader Glen Kerunsky down to 60 points.

With five events remaining on the IHRA's 2006 schedule (including a complete make-up of the rained-out Toronto event in July), Kerunsky, a non-qualifier at U.S. 131, leads the Pro Mod points standings with 416 points. Rowe's 356 points have him just in front of Stott's 354 and comfortably clear of Tommy D'Aprile's fourth-place total of 293. D'Aprile leads a large group of drivers fighting to break into the top echelon of the standings: the fourth- through eighth-place drivers (D'Aprile, Mike Janis, Jim Halsey, Castellana, and Carl
Spiering) are separated by a mere 10 points.

The final five events of the IHRA season will be run during a nine-week span. The series resumes in three weeks in Norwalk, Ohio.

After qualifying No. 2 Saturday with a 6.13 best, Rowe opened Sunday's eliminations with a clutch .068 light and a 6.195 to 6.193 holeshot win over Stott in the pair's third IHRA eliminations battle of the season. The margin of victory in the race to determine which driver would leave the event in at least second place was a slim .008- second. One round later, Castellana ran his best race of the day to eliminate Rowe, 6.14 to 6.29, in a race where Rowe left the line first and led to near half-track.
