welp...

I probably won't be making an effort to tune into many (if any) races next year...it's just not worth the frustration of listing to Paul Paige's irritating voice butchering names, stats and facts

to me NHRA broadcasts have gone from "plan the weekend around" to "if there's nothing better to do" :(

As someone who only follows racing and hockey, the NHRA broadcasts are and will remain "must see" tv for me regardless of who is in the booth. Go to nearly any NASCAR board and you'll find folks complaining about one announcer or another. In fact, you're likely to see discussions about whether NBC has better coverage than Fox, or vice versa. I'm not saying that I don't have my preferences as to which NHRA broadcasters I prefer, but I'm going to continue to watch regardless.

I can't believe some of the posts on this subject. All I've ever said is that I believe that there are better qualified people out there to do the job instead of Paul Page. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I greatly prefer to listen to the AUDIOCAST. Those people understand an know drag racing. Mike Dunn is the only reason I leave the sound turned up when watching NHRA on TV. Shoot I normally know who won the races before they ever make it on TV thanks to the Audiocast. I didn't an won't post on here trying to BASH Paul Page. He does the best he can.

Thanks
Jon

I think he'll get much better Jon. Look at his achievements. He didn't get there because he didn't work hard and learn his craft.

I do agree Robert. His last few shows were way way better than his first.. I just miss the days of having a "personality" in the booth like Steve Evans. Bob Frey has a good personality and knows the racers. I'd think he'd do a GREAT JOB if given the chance.

Thanks
Jon

This is good news for me....

I just got rid of my cable and one of the very few things I was going to miss was the NHRA coverage. With this announcement I won't miss it nearly as much.

This decision hasn't been publicly announced yet so maybe there's still hope (OK I freely admit that I'm still in denial) but I just checked the IRL schedule against the NHRA schedule and by my count we could still get Marty for 12 races and PP for 11. The only difference is that next year the IRL has a race on Labor Day Weekend, which means we'd get PP for Indy. As I've said before if ESPN/NHRA are completely against splitting the season, then put Dave Rieff in the booth with Mike and hire either Alan or Lewis Bloom to replace Dave.

Alan is a great announcer at the track-if he goes in the booth, then they'll need to replace him (BRING BACK UNK, although I expect that UNK will be working publicity again next year for Brogdon) at the track. Lewis would be good too and he already does stats for ESPN. But I like Dave Rieff as announcer and Courtney Hanson, the woman who does the power blok on Spike, as pit reporter.

The man has won two Emmys. He was just thrown into that position. Why don't you guys give him a break and see how he does next year? He'll spend much of the off season preparing for the upcoming season.

Try reading this.

I haven't been a fan of Page's announcing ability, and yes, I would rather see someone else in the booth...
But drag racing is still drag racing regardless of the announcer.
Now the points system - that's a twist on things. It has a real effect on the outcome, unlike who is telling you what the points are.

We need to save this thread so that in 3 years when/if Page is still announcing and get's replaced with another crappy person and people complain and want to keep him, we can point in everyones face.

Who does like Page? Exactly.
I don't even really want to give him a chance, but I don't have a choice.

Yeah, I don't want him and didn't really like the job he did... BUT... I will watch anyway and learn to deal with it. I bet he will be better next year. He is a pro and just struggled with a new job.

I don't dislike him. I just find it hard to believe they did not ask your opinion before they put him into this position.

Maybe that's ESPN's way of telling you they don't give a rat's ass what you and some of these other guys think.

Exactly, Drag racing is the bastard stepchild that they (espn) has but don't really know what to do with.
espn will have who they want, and put the show on when they want, And will pre-empt it any time something is running long.

How do we get that changed Robert? I don't think we can. I think NHRA has to do something about it to broaden the TV market.
