Some years ago, I flew out of NY early so I could look for the Big Willy "track" near the shipping area (never did find it). Rather than go away empty handed, I navigated up to Palmdale where I had a great time.
I understand it's now gone, no?
I've still got my purple L.A.C.R. ball cap; ugly but it means something to me.

The quarry owned the property the track was on. They had made a deal with Bernie Longjohn that when it came time to mine the track property, they would make a huge ditch from Avenue T down to 138th St. Then they could put a new track down in there, out of the wind. I asked Bernie about this as the track was closing, and he said that was still an option, but it would cost him over a million dollars to build the new track and it was someone else's property. Can't blame him for not doing it.

Some of you were very lucky to go to those tracks and live the sport in those days. Obviously much different on the east coast. I guess there is some trade off being in stock car country in the 80's and in Carolina. Going to Darlington, Charlotte, Rockingham, and North Wilkesboro when the sport was different. Seeing the Richard Petty, Cale, David Pearson, Buddy Baker, early Dale Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, Bobby Allison and Neil Bonnett. I would have loved to been in Cali in those days however.
