Here's the latest from 1320 TV:

Last weekend's postponement of the May 18-20 Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway was no spontaneous decision. "The irony of the whole thing is that the people at Bristol Dragway were victims of their own search for perfection," Anthony Vestal, NHRA director of media relations, said. Track officials had the task of smoothing out some bumps in the racing surface near the top end. But while tackling that, they decided to improve an already acceptable launch pad and 770 feet of concrete. But the surface kept coming up in small chips. Vestal was among those who drove passenger cars up and down the lanes, trying to help determine if the new surface would stay in place and at what point the pavement would stop tearing loose. "They were trying everything," Vestal said. "So when Jeff Byrd (the facility's president) said they didn't spare any expense in trying to get the surface ready , he was right."

I have a little different angle on this. Please don't think I'm nuts but this idea just came to me and I was curious what others thought.

It is my understanding that there has been a huge amount of promotion done for this race and a lot of hype over NHRA racing at Bristol. Bruton Smith had Cory Mac's car fire up at the NASCAR race at Bristol (again, more promotion). It is rumored that this event is or is almost sold out. All things considered, this looked like a big weekend for NHRA Drag Racing in NASCAR country and a chance for our sport to grow. Now, this surface issue comes up and the track says they did all they could to solve this "problem" but nothing could be done. NHRA is forced to postpone this event because "they" deemed the surface un-raceable.

The more I thought about this, it kinda reminded me of a historical Drag Racing event in 1974 that had the potential to make our sport grow. There are many stories and many opinions about National Challenge '74 but bottom line, efforts were made to cause harm and bring discredit to PRO and National Challenge events before they got too big and became a threat.

Is it possible that this surface problem at Bristol is a behind the scenes joint venture between Bruton Smith and NASCAR to cause harm and bring discredit to NHRA? Think about it, race fans are beginning to lose interest in NASCAR and are looking to other forms of motorsports for entertainment. Bruton Smith might be bitter because of NHRA not wanting to sell to him and might be looking for a little payback. The interest from race fans and the media in NHRA Drag Racing is growing every year and I just wonder if NASCAR is starting to notice and is getting worried. So lets take a look at this. If NASCAR and Bruton Smith can make NHRA look like the bad guys by postponing this race and making ticket holders angry (who may be going to their first Drag Race, looking for a change from NASCAR), wouldn't this be a good start in causing harm and bringing discredit to NHRA Drag Racing before it gets too big and becomes a threat?

This is just a different way to look at this matter and I truly hope I am wrong.

Dave I don't think that Nascar has anything to worry about from NHRA! But the fact that Bristol and Charlotte are(were) on the same weekend, and Bruton Smith has financial holdings in both facilities. This postponement does seem a bit coincidental(sp?).......Things that make you go Hmmmmmm!!!!

I don't see it that way..I can't imagine Bruton taking this kind of loss..or subject himself to this embarassment. They flew Jimmy Prock out there to check the track..and he said they've run on worse. So getting it prepared to race was when the sh!t started.

This doesn't make NHRA look bad..it makes Bruton/Bristol look bad.

well, thats it, now super chevy at bristol has been rescheduled. i can't take it any more. now this thread will go on for another couple days with concrete specialists pointing fingers. with all the crewchiefs and concrete specialists hanging out on the mater, its no wonder the world is in turmoil and gas prices have trippled. relax people, the sun will still rise and set even though the concrete pad has fallen apart. just think of all the poker or bowling we can watch no on saturday and sunday night

This schedule change has also affected the Jr Dragster Eastern Conference Finals (the holy grail for jr drag racers). They have had to cut the schedule short since it follows the rescheduled Powerade race.
