NHRA Gets Tough on Oildowns

It's like the recent football hit penalty. They tried money, but it didn't work. They added a game suspension without pay, and suddenly people are paying attention. In my opinion, it has to be money (to effect the small, occasional teams) and points (to effect the big teams going for the championship).

One bad race, come on folks, get over it. Don't get me wrong, I know noone likes oil downs. But just like by runs, red lights, peddle fests, and rain outs, they happen. And will continue to happen.

The past two years we worry about short fields. Now we get a large turnout and we talk of fining and baning cars that expierence problems.

I don't believe fines are the answer. I would much rather see NHRA drop the testing ban so teams can rent a track on a week day and test all day. If something goes wrong, no harm to a Natl. event. Also if better equipment is available to clean up quicker that should be looked at. #3 would be to spray the whole track, (wall to wall) not just the center of each lane.

We will NEVER totally stop parts failure.

If you hate the NHRA that much why don't you take up tiddlewinks?

NHRA DOSEN"T WANT ANY MONEY! They want the teams to clean up their act. If the threat is great, more care will be taken. If a team owner tells his crew guys that any penalty money will come out of bonus money do you think they will maybe pay more attention?

Nothing will make the NHRA happier than to collect no fines this weekend and run the show clean. If you had been in the stands on Saturday in Vegas, you wanted someone to pay. Everyone was asking why don't they do something about this. Something has been done. if you don't oil the track, you don't get fined.

How much talk is going on right now in the shops in Brownsburg about oil retention? And how much was going on before Vegas? if the teams put as much effort into containment as they do to low ET there would never be another drop of oil on the track. I think NHRA has their attention now, don't you?

As always, this is my opinion, I an NOT the NHRA spokeman,

Alan

These guys run all the items that are required by NHRA. They follow the rules. Do you really think they don't have every aspect of a run on their mind including containment? Yes NHRA is warranted in making this decision but do you realize the time it takes the crew to clean up after an oil down? THAT in itself is enough to get their attention. The crews hate oil downs just as much as NHRA and the fans!

I agree there should be monetary and point penalties for oil downs.

I think there needs to be speedier, yet thorough, cleanups.

But what is up with containment devices not working? I mean a titanium
clutch can withstand a disintegrating clutch, so why don't the mandated
containment devices withstand a kicked rod? Are the specifications not good
enough?

Seems like there used to be penalties in both $$ and points for oil downs. If my memory is correct they removed them when they went to 1000 ft. But then I suffer from C.R.A.F.T and could be wrong.

CRAFT=can't remember a friggin thing or something close to that.

Hey Lisa,

Not arguing just discussing. Were you here on Saturday? The show was awful. I know nobody blows up on purpose. And yes I know the teams do what is mandated, but I also know that most don't spend much time thinking about how to contain the oil. They say, "Well, we have a diaper and a catch can, we did what you told us to do." What they are being told now is "Keep the oil off the track."

When my dad used to tell me that I couldn't go out with my friends until I finished my homework I would do my homework. But when he told me if I didn't get B's or better I couldn't have the car, I worked a LOT harder on that stuff. The threat was my motivation.

And I know that there is a lot of effort being put in by the teams now that wasn't being put in last week, just because the threat of punishment is so much greater.

thank you.

Three strikes and your out. Each event every car has an allowance of "fouls" use them up and your out simple and effective. The consequence is equal if your a mega money team or a part time racer. No more fun for you if you oil down the race track to many times.
