NHRA Awards 2017

I just watched all of them and have to say how disappointed I am in the camera work. Many times Dave Reiff introduced people on stage which I never saw because the camera stayed on him. Was the camera man asleep? Nothing personal Dave, but I would like to see the people you're introducing too.

Link?

If the NHRA produced the awards show too, then it's time to completely replace the cameramen. The racing events are a perfect example of how inexperienced these cameramen are. ESPN productions were much better. They just didn't start on time.

That was the worst produced program I’ve ever seen.

I agree Phillip! It was nowhere near as good as in years past. They kept the damn camera glued to Dave Rieff or Tony Pedregon and didn’t even show the Lucas Oil sportsman champions as they were announcing them!

budget cuts, couldn't afford the swivel on the tripod or someone to turn it :)

Blame the director, and/or the producer of the program, not the camera operator(s). It sounds like the production crew didn’t have enough cameras.
The camera operators do what the director tells them.
However, it is up to the director and producer to ensure they have enough prerecorded video of the various racers to show while the presenters are talking.
Nobody wants to watch talking heads the entire time.

Well, Well, Well. Thanks to all above I noticed the same thing in a Cringe Worthy way. This is what I observed.

Peter Clifford did not mention the name of ONE Fox exec or staffer. I would of thought they would be granted the same acknowledgement and thanks as that of the Coca Cola Company and AAA.

Peter Clifford is clearly out of his depth at any form of public speaking. He was focused on the RHS teleprompter the whole time.
He looked the same on the winners stage at Pomona.

His speeches were wooden in delivery and content. Compare him to Dave or Bruno the year before.
To his cred he did mention the Crew Chiefs as did Ron Capps the year before.

When the Pro Mod drivers were out on the stage, well I assume they were as they were talked about but we didn't see them, the camera was on T Ped or Dave.
Likewise the same went for the Top Alcohol drivers. Why wearnt they interviewd out the back like the other classes?
What was the reason? The camera person had to take a leak? Because it wasn't a MYDRS sponsored series they got no air time?
What was the reason.

If I was Jim Whitley I'd be madder than Tanner Gray!

That was a total embarrassment and an affront to the other two series in the NHRA circus. Poor form.

Yes Director, Producer, vision switcher who ever was responsible that was a major fail.

Why don't they do a Red Carpet segment like the other awards shows. Gives the ladies a chance to shine and gives all a public showing. It's all about connecting with your fan base. Marketing 101.

Someone above made reference to the Fox shows and or the All Access coverage and I concur.
We in TV land are at home watching on our screens.
We are not at the track and we dont see what you see. We can only see what what's on our screen.
That is decided by the Producer, Director whoever in the OB van. So when the announcer says the Camaro coming to the line and the vision shows something else the two do not form a 'Picture' for us at home. Thats fine if you are at the track and you see it all, but not for us at home.

The announcers need to keep this in mind and do what other sports do......announce off the monitor in the booth so we are all synced up and singing of the same hymn sheet.
Either the Director says left lane first or he follows what the announcer is doing. Simple Stuff.

I won't speak to the production, I was there so I didn't see it and have not gone back to watch it.

One thing I can clear up for you Mike, the Pro Mod Winner (in this case Troy Coughlin) was the only one there and was acknowledged. As were all the Lucas Champs from Super Gas to Top Alcohol They did not speak, but they were acknowledged as Champions. Pro Mod has their own stand alone Awards Banquet in Las Vegas where all the teams are present and all the focus is on them. The Lucas Champs have the same earlier in the afternoon in Hollywood.

The Mello Yello Ceremony is focused on the Mello Yello series and Champions. But they do acknowledge the others. During the World Series celebration did they mention who won the AAA title? or the AA title?

There also was a Red Carpet and photo area for the arriving guests, and many of those photos have been shared via social media or team websites, just because you didn't see it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

As for the announcers, when doing TV I always and only focus on what's on the screen so I am talking about what you are seeing. When I'm at the track my main responsibility is to those at the track so if I see something happening I draw attention to it, if the cameras don't catch it the people in the stands who are listening will. I am also tasked with keeping the people in the pits that can't see the track up to speed so I often relay information for my "Radio" audience.

I'm not sure what all the complaining is all about. Considering this was not intended to be a televised event, i found the video production just fine for what it was. Its not like this was the Oscars or Emmys. I guess we're all spoiled in the day and age of slick overproduced media, that we expect production value of everything to be top notch. I know many of the folks that went and they had a great time as always.

Ben, I may be way off here, but are you the Ben Griffin that ran injected fuel cars back in the ‘70s?

Not a personal swipe at him by any means but i Agree about peter clifford. He is terrible in front of the camera. At pomona with the champs he was tongue tied.
