SONOMA, Calif. – There are good and bad racing days and Greg Stanfield and the Nitro Fish/Coffman Tank Trucks GXP Pro Stock team drew the latter Sunday at Infineon Raceway.
Stanfield began the FRAM/Autolite Nationals eliminations on the good side a with a first-round victory over Ron Krisher, 6.587 seconds at 209.56 mph to 6.619 at 206.67. The bad followed when he returned to the pit area and discovered the number one engine was hurt.
The team changed motors between rounds and Stanfield answered the quarterfinals call with a 6.589 quarter-mile at 209.43 run to Mike Edwards’ winning 6.561 at 210.60.
“We found issues with the second motor, too,” said a frustrated Stanfield. “What happened was a fluke. It was just bad timing.”
He will be working on the team’s primary motor back at his Bossier City, La. shop, getting it ready for the final NHRA Western Swing race that begins Friday at Kent, Wash, near Seattle.
