Medlen Moved To Napa Car (1 Viewer)

The announcement seems pretty cut and dry!
John Medlen takes over the tuning with Ace as an assistant.
Demotion is what it means to me. It was a different scenario in Hagan's camp where John was more of an addition. I wonder how Ron feels about it.
Ron's always complimentary of Ace who seems to be very close to him.
I hope Ace can deal with it I hope he is a team player because he brings allot to the table.

I think the Ace will go the way of the Richards & LaHaie folks. Time to enjoy life & relax.

That was my thought.... Jason is there and Del's car (although it appears to be coming along) still seems to have some gremlins. I think it would be a cool thing to see him team up with AJ.

This was my first thought, go join his Jason over at Al-Anabi. But remember, Aaron brooks is still on the al anabi payroll, as well as dickie and kurt. If AJ decides to hire the ACE, he'll have three top notch crew chiefs on one car. Then again, they do have a TON of money...

hmmm--- maybe its time for another funny car:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Here are Ron's thoughts in his pre-race release.....

Capps prepared for emotional Norwalk race
06/23/2010

With the crew chief change announced this week on the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger Funny Car team, Ron Capps is preparing himself for an emotional fourth annual NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio, this weekend.

Team owner Don Schumacher announced on Sunday that John Medlen, who came on board at Don Schumacher Racing earlier this year to help tune the Funny Car driven by Matt Hagan, would now take over as crew chief on the NAPA car. Capps' longtime tuner Ed "Ace" McCulloch would become a consultant to all three DSR Funny Car teams. Capps and McCulloch both joined DSR in 2005.

"This is probably one of the bigger races in my career," said Capps. "It's not the first race of the Countdown or even the last race of the year, but it's going to be so much different for me not having Ed McCulloch as my crew chief. John Medlen will now be the one pointing into the windshield before I make a run.

"It's going to be an emotional race, but you have to put all that aside and focus on what's going on right now in our 2010 season. We've slipped to seventh in the points and there are only five races left before the Countdown to 1 playoffs starts and that’s when reality starts to hit. We saw the drama unfold last year when in the last race of the regular season there were several teams trying to get into the 10th and final spot. Our NAPA team is way too good of a team to be focused on that part of it.

"When you go through a change like this, it can be emotional, and at times it feels a little personal. You have to put that aside and think about the business side of it. One great thing about being with DSR is that there is such a great support system in place, that having Ed McCulloch stay on board and work with all the Funny Car teams, including the NAPA team, can only make everybody better.

"We know that if we get into the Countdown, we as a team are as good and as capable as any other team out there, if not more capable than some. It all comes down to confidence. With the Countdown being six races you obviously have to peak at the right time but, when you're in the middle of the summer months of racing, like we are going into Norwalk this weekend, there's nothing better than having confidence in your team.

"When you have challenges thrown at you like this, you really learn a lot about yourself. You learn about the people around you and, to be honest with you, it's going to be fun to work our way back to the top.

"I was very close to Eric Medlen (who lost his life in a testing accident in 2007) and I've gotten to know John Medlen pretty well, and even more so when he came to DSR. And, after all those years watching John point his finger at his son Eric before he made a run, I am now going to be the one John points at before we make a run. It's going to be very unique."

I think you will see Ace make a move in a few months unless things don't pick up on the NAPA car. He should announce that he wants to take some personal time away from the track and then wait for the phone to ring.

i agree with ed - IMO the press release mite have been handled differently;
maybe something to the effect of 'ace to co-crewchief with.....'

hopefully they will find success and mutual respect comments will follow
(i.e. coil/neff)

This whole testing thing has the potential to really drive up cost. If you want to test, you would have to front another racer to build a car that never runs NHRA nationals. It would be a test only car.

You will certainly see this in the future, if it is not now happening.

My feelings about DSR have not improved...............

I'm with you, Rex.

Like Ace himself said, it's not like the car is out in left field. The car is actually running pretty decent and they've been on the short end of the stick of some pretty close races. When you have things going that way, the law of averages usually evens things out at some point and they'll probably be right back in the thick of it. I also agree that the press release was handled poorly. There should've never been an outright demotion, not even a "co crew-chief" announcement. Bring in the other set of eyes like a team is supposed to do. Support each other and do what it takes to get the job done without worrying about titles. That culture was fine in the old days, but today's teams are outfitted with so many great minds, many of which are working together on muli-car efforts, that I just don't get the need to have that kind of structure.

Then again, as a huge Ace fan I'm very much biased...............:D

"I would have liked for it to have been handled a little bit differently, but I understand this is the business we are in.” Ace
