Massey ready for showdown in Brainerd

BRAINERD, Minn. - Just two weeks removed from battling it out with the west coast hitters, rookie NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Spencer Massey and Team Owner/Tuner Gene Snow will turn their sites to the Midwest for this weekend's Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn. Massey enters the event fourth in national points standings, trailing points leader Sean O'Bannon by 76 points.

Massey, 23, of Ft. Worth, Texas, has two wins to his credit on the Lucas Oil Divisional trail, along with a runner-up finish at the Schuck's Auto Supply Nationals in Seattle. Despite a strong desire to earn his first national event win, Massey is more focused on going rounds and earning valuable points.

"We're pretty much taking the same mind set we had out west to Brainerd," said Massey. "Right now we have a shot at the Championship, and a definite shot at finishing in the top five. We just have to keep going as many or more rounds than the guys we're going up against. Out there we were going head to head with O'Bannon, [Steve] Federlin and Duane Shields. This weekend we'll be up against Bill Reichert and Art Gallant along with Federlin. Reichert's been pretty hot the past few races, so he's the guy to stop. We have a lot of room to improve in points, so that's our focus. We would really love to win, but we would be happy with going to the semi's or finals."

After missing Sonoma, team Crew Chief Vernon Wilde will be back with the team in Brainerd.

"Vernon was unable to make it out to Sonoma with us," stated Massey. "So getting Vernon back will be a big boost to the team. He's a very big part of our success."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, with two sessions and concludes on Saturday. Eliminations begin Saturday afternoon and conclude on Sunday.
