Massey set to defend points lead in Houston

BAYTOWN, Texas - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster rookie Spencer Massey will be looking to defend his current points lead in Division 4 standings during this weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Houston Raceway Park. Massey, in his first season of competition behind the wheel of drag race legend Gene Snow's injected nitro dragster, leads Lee Callaway by 42 points going into the event.

Massey, who celebrated his 24th birthday Wednesday, hopes to block out all of the championship hype this weekend.

"I'm just going to try to stay focused this weekend," said Massey. "I'm just going to treat each run like it's just another ordinary round. Callaway has came on strong down the stretch, and it definitely looks like it's going to go down to the wire. Hopefully we can win this weekend to help make sure we win the division championship."

Massey is encouraged by the recent performance of the car after qualifying No. 1 at national events in Sonoma, Calif., and Brainerd, Minn., and No. 3 at the recent Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indy.

"Gene has the car running very strong right now," stated Massey. "It's making a ton of horsepower, we're just working on managing it. We just need a touch more consistency and we should be where we need to be. Hopefully we'll find that this weekend."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, followed by two sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
