Lucas Speeds To Quarterfinal Finish

Ennis, TX (Sept. 24, 2006) - Morgan Lucas was turned back in the quarterfinal round of Top Fuel eliminations on Sunday of the 21st annual O’Reilly Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex by Tony Schumacher.

After rallying to qualify in the No. 8 position with an elapsed time 4.637 seconds, Lucas’ first round pairing was against Troy Buff. He began his 50th career professional start by defeating Buff with a stellar run of 4.652 seconds at a speed of 304.25 mph to his opponents coasting time of 9.792 seconds, 88.16 mph.

Against Tony Schumacher, it was over pretty quick as Lucas smoked the tires around 300 feet out with Schumacher marching down the quarter-mile with a time of 4.615 seconds, 308.57 mph to Morgan’s time of 8.227 seconds/105.66 mph.

“Overall, we had a good weekend,” said Lucas, who occupied two racing cockpits this weekend. “We brought out a new car that shows great potential and we’re going to test tomorrow to find out more about what it wants. With these back-to-back races, it just makes good sense to run the car as much as possible. After that, we’re heading back to Reading with both teams.”

In the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel points standings, Lucas continues his climb up on the roster with 915 points and needs 63 more points to overcome the seventh-place runner, Larry Dixon, who has 978 markers.

When the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Top Alcohol division continued on Sunday, Morgan Lucas stepped up his program by running low elapsed time of the meet with his excellent time of 5.279 seconds, 266.27 mph to defeat Darrell Hitchman in the quarterfinals. It was the semi-finals where Spencer Massey upstaged Lucas’ run for the Texas title after defeating him with a time of 5.336 seconds, 266.48 mph to Morgan’s slightly quicker time of 5.333 seconds, 265.95 mph.
