Just curious what everyone's thoughts are on the push for live coverage

About the only thing that I watch live anymore, is the News, Daytona 500, Indy 500, and the Super Bowl. I dvr everything else so that I can cut my viewing time in half.

I like it,but i dont think its fair to the teams for a 50 min turnaround,if they arent ready they should give them extra time, and if it runs late then still show it,our show has been late how many times now??

Agree with Eugene-other than 49er games I virtually don't watch anything live any more. I also agree it puts undue pressure on the teams and I am concerned about whether it will possibly create a safety issue. (I'll leave it to others more knowledgeable than me to comment on whether safety could indeed be compromised.) I also wonder about the practicality-all you need is an oil down or a crash in the semis and you could end up running out of time and not seeing the finals at all.

between rounds in the pits is a profit center, why decrease it?
unless you can prove or show greater TV ratings, the sponsor/s should be
aware that your product is same day/tape delay to a national audience and
that a greater focus is towards event attendance that provides a highly
unique
selling tool to fans for up to 4-5 hours per day per event.

kiosks / midway / food & bev. / souvenirs / product samples / mailing lists
the guy polishing the pop can - can you imagine how many people walk out
of nat. events with a bottle of that stuff!?, it's the last thing in the world
they would have thought of that morning when they woke up.........

Live TV? No. Live Internet (at least audio?), you bet. Listen to it every day the live audio is on.

It's not worth the imposed 50 min turnaround. Theres the safety issue, the cost issue, and like this race, both cars were a little late so we got to watch Capps talk to a fan and Hagan put his boots on. HOW THRILLING. :p

Even worse is they said had this been Houston and one car was late, they would send the on time car for a single for the win.

Same day tape delay is just fine.

What is more important to me is have the show air on time!!!!!! I will say that at least the first two this season has but I don't expect that to continue.

Very valid points

NHRA tried Live Television in the mid '90's and it did not go well at all.. I think the events were Houston & Englishtown. The problem is what happens if there is another (God forbid) situation like what happened to Antron at Pomona and there was a 90 minute clean up involved. What is NHRA going to do for that 90 minutes? I mean look at the dead air time there was on Sunday before the FC Final when there were NO cars in the staging lanes. There are too many factors that can go the wrong way for this to come out good. I am a very optimistic/realistic man. I mean on paper this looks great, but in reality. We shall see...:confused::o

Even if the last two rounds are live, I'm still not going to change my current viewing habits. I DVR the show, and then watch it late in the evening when everything and everyone is done for the day, and I've got the TV to myself. For me, a live show would be meaningless.

I absolutely refuse to spend a nice Sunday afternoon or early evening sitting in the house, watching TV.

Yes, I DO think that was a not-so-silent protest by the FC teams. Ron Capps didn't seem in any particular rush when he exited the truck upon arrival in the staging lanes. He even went over to talk to someone for a bit first.

Live TV doesn't matter to me because if I am not doing anything I will watch on ESPN3. But if I didn't have the ESPN3 option, I wouldn't mind seeing the last 2 rounds live.

I watch on ESPN3 every Friday and Sunday, so I guess it does.

Hey, they are trying something. Everyone complains they don't try new things or do enough. However, we have all seen the "live" curse; anytime a live event is scheduled, an oildown happens.

I gave up on ESPN2 because the preceding show is always late and delays NHRA. To me, starting the tv show on time/as scheduled is the bigger issue.

NO...NO...NO.....Our sport just does not transelate (sp) to live TV !!!.....We are probably the only motorsports/racing that is done in less than a minute segments as far as the actual racing is done...all the other racing is usually over a much greater time span and works OK for live coverage.....I know that the newer generation of fans are what the series are trying to aim for, but I guess that us "older" people are usesd to going to a drag race for the whole day whether we're competing or not. Making the event live on TV is not near as important as having the "show" done really well in it's delayed way. Some good comments have already been said about how fans use "down time" for getting out of the stands for a spell and I think the broadcast would only be better by giving the people involved with it more time to do it and get in their filler segments. As to the safety aspect, it would seem only reasonable that the hurried turn arounds open up a chance for more errors to accidently happen in the pits that could also negatively affect the racing..............................

paul, i agree and applaud them for doing this live @ houston; i hope i'm wrong
and there is a time and place for live nhra; i don't think it's the entire series,
and i don't think it's even all 4 rounds, but i do think it's worth trying
every so often; the same i'd like to see a saturday night elims. eventually,
or live semis and finals for 'major' events such as winters/gators/nationals.

cause and effect - i'm a vendor paying $X to be there and am told you are going
to shorten the time the spectators have in front of my product or service,
then I am going to ask for a decrease in rent.

i think the 'live' deal in houston is possibly an attempt to air at a set time?
i agree, the tape delay show is great; the run-ons of preceeding shows
are extremely annoying

Good point, I had not thought of that.

I could care less if it's live or not. As long as its same day and at a reasonable time (and on time) I'm good.

I can see live finals, that would be ok. If they are ahead of schedule then show some sportsman finals. Open people up to the entire world of drag racing.

Otherwise the safety concerns, risk of bad runs due to breakage, or bye runs seems to out weigh any benefit. I'd be curious to know what the thought process behind this is.

I did not read coverage as TV specific. As long as I can hear what's going now on I can watch it later. Audio is coverage as much as anything else.
