Terrific article about John Hagen. And Rich, thanks for the awesome photos and memorabilia. As a young lad hanging around Minnesota Dragways, I saw John Hagen racing there alot. With that Duster he ran back in about '72, I got his autographed picture when I was 8 years old. I treasured that picture then and man, do I ever wish I still had it now.

One of the greatest and nicest people I ever met. Honored to have been able to ride in the car on the ramp truck guarding the funny pages. Gave me my first nickname. Cleanest cars on the planet. Never had much but never needed it with hard work and persistence.

Hard thing watching your boyhood hero die while your standing on the starting line. Worse when you see the family at the funeral.

John was a great man and a true hero. Not because of his accomplishments but how he conducted his life.

Thanks Mark and Jim, I'm sure there are many more of us that can claim John as our "boy hero" . The first place my Dad (first National Event I had gotten him to since he "sold everything" in '77) was to see his "old friend" through Charby (Richard Charbonneau) , John. We must have spent a couple hours in his pit that fateful morning. Man the stories I heard. My Dad to this day won't go back.

Thanks for posting that Rich. As the next edition of the "North Star" nats approaches, I'd been thinking about that fateful day, and what I saw. :(:(

Thanks for replacing that memory with some really good ones instead. :)

Rich ask your dad if he knew Ronnie Camp, a guy named Bones and another name Big (cause he was LOL).

I was made to take my naps as a toddler in a yellow hearse (there was only one of those around the tracks).

The folks used to go out with Charb's, Hagen's, Camp's...was a pretty tight big circle in those days.

Yes Jim, He does and I do remember the yellow hearse, Naps at the race track? Not this kid! As Mom always said " I was a hyper kid"... Gee I wonder why? LOL! Did Bones later have something to do with a injected FED - Brown? I seem to remember that. I could be wrong.

I was like well 3 LOL. And I would lay in that damn thing for like 30 minutes wide awake then finally get a damn kitchen pass. Cool ride but when it was at the track I knew I was screwed for nap time.

There was a huge cast of characters that came and went along the way. From the crew that hand built a Willy's (literally a 41 from scratch hammered out of sheets) in the family garage to Hagen's shop crowd, Fluery's, Wheeler's, Fasching's, a couple of bikers (names coming in slowly).... the list goes on and on.

Bones was involved on many deals ;) some good and some well.... lol.
