I had heard that Steve was running more of the family business and that Billy was stepping back I guess it's true -

IMO when they were winning a lot Steve was very vocal and happy, then when they fell off a little Steve seemed to get snippy, sarcastic and short. Started skipping races and lost interest. I think the countdown, welfare system, did him in. Work hard, dominate and then have it all taken away.
Heck he has multiple championships time to go something else he loves.

I heard something about this around Christmas time. I guess it is true. Good for Billy and Steve. Steve is a dad now and you can tell he loves his kids big time. It changes you. A lot! You can see that his priorities have changed in the last few years.

Don't look now but for 2026 NASCAR has gone to a very similar countdown system (the Chase) that applies to the top 16 points leaders after 26 regular season races. Interestingly enough, both NASCAR and NHRA begin by awarding the #1 regular season points leader 2100 points to start off with.

What really jumps out to me is that Billy is now "semi retired" from Capco and Steve is taking over the helm and giving both his parents a break.

I tried talking to Steve on Friday of last year's Epping race. His demeanor was completely different from when I talked with him at Phoenix in 2023. At Phoenix we got to talking about long distance target shooting and the conversation went on for a few minutes.
But, at Epping, the last thing he wanted to do was talk about anything.

Steve has always been outspoken about the NHRA countdown that they adopted in 2007. It was patterned after a some what successful NASCAR chase format started in 2004. The problem with the format is you could win every race going into the countdown have issues during the countdown and not win the championship. Conversely a team can be "testing" during the season come on strong in the count down and win the championship. The old points format rewarded consistency throughout the entire season which in this old mans opinion is the way it should be.

Steve is super competitive and running only part time didn't do him any good as a driver or Richard and Bobby any good as tuners. Running the full schedule with Billy in the seat should prove very interesting.

Billy deserves a chance to have some fun he built the CAPCO business into the powerhouse it is today.

Just an FYI I've heard Steve very well could show up as a blocker in the countdown to prove his point, but then again I heard that several months ago and haven't heard anything since.
