I was at the first Mid-South Nationals. 1988 if I remember correctly.
Don't remember any stats but it sure was killer to have something of that scale so close to my small town Arkansas roots.
Might not be THE best but it was MY best national event.

I haven't watched every event ever, but of recent memory there was that final in Pomona where Schumacher won the title in the last run of the year AND by setting a record. I bet that would have been pretty cool to have been at. Maybe not Doug K's fav race ever.

Well one of the most memorable for me was the first, Inaugural (sp) national at HPT, the first nitro car to ever go down was Muldowny and she went 4.96 I believe followed shortly by a quickest ever 4.88 by Orsmsby.

But my pick for best ever was the year at HPT when force put the bounty out on the starting line for the first 4 by a funny and got beat to it shortly after by Etchels, then the first 300 by a funny was ran not long after that by Epler. What a fun race that was!

Indy 69... followed close by Indy 67...

Only bad '69 is that John got burned bad and we lost him 2 weeks later... 7.2's in floppers, and a 7.2 by Sush in an awful, awful...

'67, Large Father finally ran a six, and Doug's 7.65 in the corvair...

d'kid

I have only been a NHRA follower for a few years now so..... my favorite so far was Ashley's first win

why was that race special? Was that the year of the 'otter pops' larry minor teams? You kinda need to provide some substance why you feel that particular race is the 'best ever'. Otherwise why post the poll?

For me., its world finals 83'. Last national event at the county. Jim dunn vs Gary Burgin in the funny car final. Chi town clinching the title. The history of that event and the people there made that one very special.
Indy with 'GRANDE PADRE' shaving the beard has to go down as one of the best.
INDY 91 with Pat Austin going for the sweep in TAFC and top fuel, in his first final in G.O.'S car, only to bang the blower in the burnout. That one was great. I think that was mike dunn's FC win too?
For me...most memorable was california nationals 89'. Dennis Forcelle's driving job to avoid hitting Amato, G.O. Flipping the car in round 2, and our super comp team beating Al Padron in round 1 for our first NHRA national event round win! Oh, i was 'grounded' for sneaking out to go to the drive-in movies the night before we left to go to that race, and had to watch all that historic race from the grandstands, and could not work on our car.

I was at Phoenix '92, but I don't know what made that race so special? I was at Pomona '94 when KB ran 311 and 314 back to back! I was at Dallas '97 when Cory ran the first 320 pass. What was the most memorable thing about that race was, After TF Qualifying 12-18 were separated by less than .02 hundreds of a second! In all of my races I have never seen that! The final session was like "Who's gonna get bumped out next?"

But THE BEST National event to my memory has to be the Summer Topeka '95 or '96? When Joe Amato and Blaine Johnson ran the first 4.50 passes in TF Dragster. And John Force ran the first 4.80 FC pass at a 4.88!

Mine is 92 Reading. First TF run in the 4.7's by Cory Mac, first FC in the 5.0's by Cruz, and first PS in the 7.0's by Scott Geoffrion. How many times has stuff like that happened in the same event? it also happens to be my first Nat'l event, how's that for an introduction?

I too was at Dallas in '97, leaning on the fence not very far from the finish line when Cory ran 320. I could tell it was different from any other I'd seen, even before the numbers lit up on the scoreboard. It was a perfect pass.

I was also at Topeka for the first 4.50 TF and 4.80 FC passes, and that would also be my vote for the best race ever!

Dallas 92. After winning back to back championships, Force was on his way to his 3rd in a row until a late season charge by Cruz. They met in the final and both smoked the tires. Both pedaled numerous times to try and get it to hook up. Force hit the wall at least 2 times trying to get the win. Cruz got the win and the championship later. The excitement and tension in the air at that race was unbelievable.

it's actually a little idea i cooked up after all the references on the NHRA Audiocasts making reference to Phoenix 92' So I decided to really put it to the test.

Phoenix 92 was when Austin won TF & TAFC that year, Plus Tom Hoover defeating Richard Hartman, only other person I remember winning that year was David Rampy in Comp and that i remember from American Sports Cavalcade

I'm going with the Chief Auto Parts Nationals at the Texas Motorplex, I forgot the year though; either 89 I think, or 90. It was cloudy and sort of cold all weekend and it just seemed like the records we re-set multiple times in every class. Lee Beard didn't have even the slightest hint of grey hair as he was tuning Ormsby's gray-primered top fueler. I think the locals were out in force, too... Brent Fanning, Doug Foxworth, Bruce Allen, Todd Simpson, even Keith Jackson from Denver. That's when that track earned the Moniker as the worlds fastest racetrack.

Wow Jim, what a way for NHRA to unVAIL itself to you!:p

Chris, the Primer Castrol car was in '89 after Ormsby smacked it up at Brainerd..
