Indy, It's just another race.

Not according to those who live it......

Always loved Indy.....went 20 of the years between 1973 and 1995 before moving west. I have to say that my first one in '73 completely blew my mind as far as drag racing goes. SO many cars, SO much good racing. HUGE manufacturer's midway. Legends and future legends everywhere, and often enduring history being made. Sometimes camping and sometimes in hotels, but either way a blast. A six-hour drive to and from, so I went Friday through Monday most years....including '75 when it was part of my honeymoon. I know what you mean by "living it." :D

After that video I WANT TO GO AGAIN!

I have never been to that race in person, but the one memory that stands out (to me) is Snake Vs Jim Nicoll in Top Fuel. They went thru the lites & clutch exploded in Nicoll's car, cut it in half, and Prudhomme saw the chassis & engine sliding down the track ahead of him. He thought Nicoll had been killed & he was so shook up, he wanted to quit. That has to be one of the most dramatic moments in drag racing.

I have been to over 100 national events in my lifetime. 14 of those were Indy between 1997 and 2010 and for me nothing else is Indy. I truly hope to get to another before my spectating days are done as IMO there is nothing else like it.

Cliff, you've got to go. There's nothing like it, from the car corral with all the awesome hot rods, to the sportsman pits with hundreds of cars..literally hundreds. Just walking around and seeing all the cool stuff it's amazing. In 2011 Indy was my first national event..mind blown. The next year I went to Charlotte on a spur of the moment decision. Nice, very pristine facility but it had no soul, not like Indy. So after a two hiatus I was back at Indy for '15 & '16. I just love the place. Also last year I went to the DSR open house. That's a treat in itself. I changed jobs this year so I didn't have enough vacation to go this time but absolutely am already planning for next year. Just do it once and you're hooked.

To all the people that say "Indy is just another race" ... Did you watch yesterday?? Did you see Tim Wilkerson DEVASTATED that he crossed the center line in the semis? Did you see Greg Anderson CRUSHED that he lost on a hole shot in the Pro Stock final? Did you see that 1,000 yard stare in Capps' eyes after yet another Indy let down? Did you Steve Torrence cry over winning? Did you see JR pop out of the hatch while the car was still rolling in the shutdown to celebrate winning Indy?

Yep ... just another rodeo on the tour.

Well, if I win the lottery.... heh I pretty much just stay around AZ races anymore, so my national race is here at Wild Horse. When I lived in SoCalif, I used to go to Pomona every year. Lots of great memories from that race. Went to my first nat'l event at Firebird when they started holding the national events here, so, like 1985 I think. Also used to go to the old AHRA race in Tucson. Track wasn't too good, but I got to see Garlits & Prudhomme and "name" racers of the day.

I love it all, starting with the show downtown thru to the final. It's a long week in the campground but I love it. The live TV delays tug at my patience but the crowds are holding steady or growing and that's a good thing.

I haven't posted anything here in a very long time, but this one got my attention. Indy is anything BUT just another race. I've missed only one since 1967, and have written about it every year, for publications like the short-lived All-American Drags Magazine to CompetitionPlus.com. I wrote about Indy being special again this year, because it very much is. There is nothing like it, and never will be.

Indy is just another race.
Yeah right...
Just like the super bowl is another football game...

I guess it's just a matter of perspective.
Indy is on my bucket list, the Super Bowl isn't...

how much online viewing is going on?....pretty sure nielsen does not take that into consideration?
IMO, nhra draws similar numbers, regardless of the race.

watching on tv, i thought indy was well attended, much the same as most races this year.

as posted on racer.com.....two weeks ago (sonoma, seattle, bir), and this week (indy)
racer.com did not post ratings from the monday finals show on fox.

Live coverage of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing finals from Brainerd scored a 0.27 rating and averaged 412,000 viewers on FOX Sports 1. That's slightly off last year's 0.3/452,000, also live on FS1 Sunday afternoon – which in turn was down from a 0.4/591,000 in 2015, when it aired on a tape-delayed basis on ESPN2.

After a disappointing ratings showing last time out, the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series was back up to its more typical numbers for live coverage of the finals from Seattle on FOX. The broadcast network telecast scored a 0.55 rating and 883,000 viewers – more than double that of last week's finals on FOX Sports 1 – despite once again going head-to-head with NASCAR on Sunday afternoon.

Ratings for the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing series' Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals were up, with Sunday's afternoon and evening sessions showing a 0.25 and average of 396,000 viewers for the noon broadcast window and 0.27/446,000 for the 5 p.m. window on FS1. Last year's drew 0.24/376,000 and 0.22/338,000.

The ratings from now until the end of the season are gonna be on the fence being that football season is winding up.
