It wasn't too many years ago the NHRA said they would not run a race with only one qualifying attempt. I really wish that was still true, but rescheduling this weekend's race would be very tough on everyone involved.
I think it just depends on where they are in the season schedule. If it's April or before, they have enough open weekends, where they can just postpone the event and push it to another weekend.
The few times they've had to use this rule -- the aforementioned dallas and the Finals in Pomona a few years ago, they didn't have any spare weekends to postpone the event to.
And looking at the schedule, there is only two spare weekends between now and the beginning of the countdown in Indy. Plus, if they did push this event to the weekend after Sonoma, that would mean the teams would be on the road nine consecutive weekends, when you consider they have back-to-back weekends after that open weekend in August.
I'm sure if the teams had a choice, they would prefer this solution.
