PJ's does all sorts of events because he is marketing HIS company, hence the term sponsor. He is definitely getting a GREAT return on his investment. He is doing it perfectly I am not denying that, bottom line is he is marketing his company and receiving a great return on his sponsorship dollars, pure genius, this is why his company makes 13 billion a year.

Disappointed would be a much better way to describe what I am rather than bent out of shape. I have a deep appreciation for those that choose to invest in the sport I enjoy to participate in at the local level as well as follow on the professional level. As I stated before, there are many products and services that have been, and still are promoted in the NHRA that I choose not to purchase for a wide variety of reasons. But no reason I would choose not to use any given product necessitates me to publicly berate the product, because there's simply enough options for just about everything you can buy.

Like it or not, our sport isn't mainstream enough to make partnering with these companies easy. All it takes is a key person to hear something like what you said at the wrong time to start a chain of unfavorable events.

If my .02 cent opinion of PJ's pizza, cancels out a multi million dollar deal................
it was not a deal to start with

And like Sam, you too miss the point. EVERYBODY has their ".02", but when all your opinion does is destruct, in most cases it's better left unsaid. Yeah, we get it; not everybody likes Papa John's. But instead of pointing out that your opinion of their product sucks, how about something like, "Hey, thanks man! Our sport has really struggled in recent years to stay relevant, so thank you for your role in keeping our sport going!".

Or again..............don't say anything at all.

Can I get A large Amazon box with half pepperoni and half sausage? J.K.
There are franchises that many may not prefer but in today's world, Everything is on the go.
I make my own pizza at home and it's just as good if not better than a "Mom and Pop" pizza shop.
I give Leah and The Papa A Ton of credit for what they have done even tho she is not my favorite. But you have to give Leah credit because she is a marketing genius!

Oh BTW, this is the latest pizza I made in my oven, Eugene.... Hands off Brutha! lol

So I guess all the people running around saying MOPAR sucks is the reason they pulled out of PS....................

OH wait it is................

Ken, You are saying your words have no impact, but yet you are still saying them .... you are likely correct that any serious sponsor who read enough of your posts would probably not take your opinion even up to the "cents" decimal point .... but I do hope that at least Sam understands where most of us are coming from in the "do we really need to shoot our collective 'selves' in the throttle foot" department.

I use my standard kitchen oven but the whole key is the temperature! set your oven on 550 and place the pizza on the second rack up from the bottom.

Also the other is the Flour.
I use Pillsbury "So Strong high gluten flour"

Shame on the man for coming up with a viable business plan and executing it successfully. I assume the folks lamenting Papa for being rich/successful would prefer if the government were responsible for all pizza distribution.

Anyways, besides allowing for another top fuel team to be out there, which employs what 20 people, he is allowing a bright new face to shine on our sport. When is the last time anyone saw an NHRA driver on a mainstream commercial? I'll wait.....

MOPAR pulled out of Pro Stock because NHRA has no vision and/or forethought. You and I both know that.

Asher's latest article over at Comp Plus hits the nail square on the head and essentially echoes what you, I and many have been saying for quite a long time about the class.

Just a few, but probably none as "mainstream" as Leah's Papa John's commercial.

I will begin by saying that though I don't order take-out pizza anymore, I am extremely happy to see Papa John's promoting his products through the motorsport we all love. It is refreshing to finally see a drag racing commercial while I'm watching regular TV on a Tuesday night. It would be interesting to learn if awareness and/or interest has increased, even a little, as a result of those spots.

That aside, I just spent 10 minutes reading yet another in a long line of First Amendment arguments - arguments that seem to have increased dramatically since last November. Without turning this into an overly political thread, I would like to remind everyone that ALL free speech is protected unless it's used to incite violence (yelling "Fire" in a crowded movie theater, for example). Agree to disagree or don't - everyone is entitled to their opinions, no matter how wrong we may think they are. (Note: Five Guys isn't all that in my opinion... but In-n-Out, on the other hand - giddy up!) That may be the single most wonderful thing about this great nation - we have choices and alternatives. Don't like Papa John's? Order Little Caesar's, or Pizza Hut, or Mom & Pops, or make your own. Competition is healthy. I don't care what kind of pizza Ken or Sam enjoy any more than they care about what I like.

Regardless, I doubt seriously that Papa John would be offended by a couple guys on a message board who don't like his pizza - no way he becomes the billionaire he is today if that's the case. Furthermore, he's not the billionaire he is today if everyone agreed with the one or two guys on a message board who don't like his pizza. Somebody's buying it - a LOT of somebody's!

What would (or will) we all be saying if other non-traditional/non-automotive companies invested in drag racing the way Papa John's has. Maybe if they did we could get more than 14 fuel cars in each category to show up more often. So again, I salute Papa John's for showing the way for the non-traditional sponsors. Maybe if the economy improves enough, more businesses will consider the opportunity for themselves.

That's certainly a paradigm I haven't quite figured out with drag racing. I would think the non-traditional stuff would make as much, or even more sense than automotive stuff. No matter the level of gearhead the target demographic may be, virtually all people need/use non-automotive stuff in their everyday lives, whether it's tennis shoes, toothpaste, household cleaners, etc. I would think it would make more sense for that type of stuff to be marketed when sales is the goal.

I'm sure that stuff gets pitched to regularly, but I'm surprised we don't see it more often.......

for all you on this board that may run your own business.....as i do....we may all have the best widget known to man as far
as we are concerned.....and some of us sell more than others.....some of us sell more for less, and some less for more.....they
are all great widgets and are purchased by widget users.....some of us profit enough from widget sales to watch/spectate
drag racing.....some of us sell enough widgets to race ourselves.....and a few profit so much they can put a professional TF team
on the track, and then use it in a national marketing campaign......please stop with the negative widget comments.
i do not have a cat/s, but this year we have a kitty litter company asking for our consideration; should you happen to have a cat/s.
somebody want to start a 'what brand of kitty litter do you like' thread? :rolleyes:o_O ...... come on. we're all on the same team here.
we've finally got a relative stranger up to bat for us, and he's a good hitter, i hope he hits a home run; grand slam even.

a baseball analogy!?.....i don't even like baseball! :D

UGH. I am constantly amazed that people do not know what the first amendment is or does. The first amendment ONLY protects you from the government, It does not protect you from anyone else. Your speech on this board is ONLY protected from the government, not from other users or entities. Papa John's could absolutely sue the users of this board who said his pizza is cardboard for defamation, slander, liable, loss of income/revenue and anything else his lawyers could dream up. And the users being sued have absolutely NO constitutional leg to stand on. In fact, they will have the burden of proof and good luck with that!

Long story short:

Government cannot cite, arrest or otherwise harm you for saying pizza is cardboard.
Everyone else absolutely can.

Now, with all of that said, Papa John seems like a smart and nice enough guy, he probably knows not everyone will like his pizza. So it's not worth his bill from the lawyers or the possible PR backlash to go after message board users who slam his product.

As for me, I am glad Papa John came on board and is putting Leah square in the public eye, even if he is doing it to sell more pizza. That is fine with me. It has been nothing but good for the sport we love. Hell, I hope Dominoe's and Little Caesar's come on board too and we have the battle of the "Pizza Wagons" like we used to have in the beer wagon days.
