This thread has gone way off course IMO...
As a lot of them do..........Always too much negativity on both sides of an argument. Who gives a crap what others opinions are unless you are just looking to argue. Takes the fun out of coming on here to see what's going on in the drag racing world. Chill out people. I got bigger things to worry about than someone's opinion of pizza. Too funny!

That's certainly a paradigm I haven't quite figured out with drag racing. I would think the non-traditional stuff would make as much, or even more sense than automotive stuff. No matter the level of gearhead the target demographic may be, virtually all people need/use non-automotive stuff in their everyday lives, whether it's tennis shoes, toothpaste, household cleaners, etc. I would think it would make more sense for that type of stuff to be marketed when sales is the goal.

I'm sure that stuff gets pitched to regularly, but I'm surprised we don't see it more often.......

I too never understood this. What's the latest dollar amount to sponsor a competitive NHRA top fuel or funny car operation? 3, maybe 5 million a year? That's a relative bargain. Yet I see companies willing to spend 15 million or more to sponsor a NASCAR operation, a sport which most people watch just to see who's going to wreck.

Bang for the buck is small in NHRA, car goes 4 rounds 5 minutes air time, PJ's does a lot of advertising and has integrated NHRA into his plan. Maybe others will notice and follow suit.
Look at all the BIG sponsors who have left the sport, I am sure they have realized the ROI is not there.

If you look at some of the sponsors now they are in similar markets to the owners and I am sure some of them are for business purposes not actual sponsorship.

I would like to make a list when I get a few minutes, also would like everyone else think about it.

Head self sponsored
Alexis self sponsored
Wilk good high school buddy gives him funding
Todd DHL Kallitta Air business partner
Bode self sponsored
Hagan MOPAR
Jack private Terry Chandler
TJ private Terry Chandler
Capps MOPAR NAPA
Force PEAK
Force Advanced Auto
Hight AAA
Worsham self Lucas Oil, who gives a lot of money to underfunded teams

Way more TV time on a NASCAR

Absolutely. However, you're also talking a fraction of the price. I don't know how accurate Sam's numbers are, but I'm betting they're close, which is about 1/6th to 1/7th of what's consistently reported as a comparable Cup budget. So I would think some value could be quantified.

Yeah, that's pretty effective. We've worked deals for our car in this manner several times on the local level for our car through our repair shop, and those folks were always happy with how it worked out because they were essentially getting guaranteed money in return.

I have nothing against Papa John's pizza, and I think it's great that they're doing cross promotion, but I prefer to spend my money at local businesses. Some of the best pizza I've had is at little hole in the wall shops.

You realize that Papa John's was that little hole in the wall shop at one time? You don't become that successful by staying some little hole in the wall.

So why hold it against John Schnatter & Papa John's for being a successful entrepreneur? That's seems pretty backwards to me.

I don't hold anything against them. What I was really after is that if I can spend my money on a locally owned store instead of at a chain, I do. And if I can buy American manufactured stuff, I do.

Papa Johns ARE local businesses… They are all franchised…

We have a Domino's just 3 blocks away here in Las Vegas. When Vegas 2 comes along I am anxious to try Papa John's Pizza. I always try to support sponsors of NHRA. When Traxxas started sponsoring John Force who I'd known since he was a struggling match racer, I bought 5 of the cars. First one a Mustang because of my '12 5.0 real one. Then a Slash 4 X 4 along with a Ford Raptor 4 X 2 which I converted to a Slash body and changed both of the to the low center of gravity chassis and put a brushless motor in the 4 X 2 and of course a John Force Funny Car. I don't buy Castrol oil anymore, went back to Valvoline. But I always used Valvoline racing oil in my race car. Supporting the sponsors and letting them know why you are keeps our sport viable. Oh yes, I have found Lucas fuel treatment among other Lucas products are the best also.

There is more TV time in Nascar IF you have a top 15 car on the track. Not much camera time if you run 20th or higher higher unless you wreck of course. Just saw the local TV ad for the upcoming New Hampshire race and the entire 30 second spot was crashing cars and fighting drivers including a bloody Tony Stewart. Not exactly focused on marketing hard clean racing.

NASCAR is still making hay off of Cale Yarborough fighting the Allisons on the backstretch after the 1979 Daytona 500 ... You expect them to show gentleman racing on their adverts now?

NHRA is guilty of the same thing ... Any time I see a commercial for NHRA it is a Pro Mod flying over the wall or a Funny Car blowing the body off.

The sponsorship by PJ's is just the kind of thing we should be very POSITIVE about.

Many motorsport sponsors fail to use the rule-of-thumb that to maximise the marketing benefit of a motorsport programme, you need to spend the same $ *again* on your own marketing & events, linked to the programme.

PJ's appear to be doing it right.

it is great to see this tf team and pizza business cross promoting each other......papa johns is 'that' company we've all wished could use nhra drag racing as a marketing platform. i hope the results are great, and i hope other businesses will see the value the nhra and it's pro teams offer......i've seen the commercial in question here many times, on many different non-sports networks. great work by all those involved.

Mike, I couldn't agree more because you're looking at the big picture. If it boosts PJ's business and other businesses get wind of it, they may be inclined to get involved with NHRA sponsorship. If people who ordinarily get no exposure to drag racing have their interest piqued by the cross-promotion, it's a win-win for the sport and the sponsor.
