Full Throttle chasing off sponsors...

once again, evidence that NHRA drag racing is not a collaborative effort
(i.e. series sponsor, sanctioning body, racers, marketing (img))
the main topic lately (from orig. HD parnter announcement) has been the
need for growth; growth in attendance; growth in revenue; and most importantly growth in TV ratings that hopefully would lead to growth in
racer's purses.
now drag racing falls into the 'action sport' category (at least as shown
on IMG's website) which markets to a youthful demographic..........
where most if not all energy drinks will look to advertise.
Does Coca-Cola feel they will gain market share by monopolizing NHRA
drag racing?.....by limiting investment by an exploding market that could
grow the sport and bring even more recognition their brand (full throttle)?
i'm probably wrong on all this and the business model Coca-Cola is using
is probably proven successful; it just doesn't seem to me that
NHRA drag racing is big enough to warrant such actions.

I understand the business thinking behind it, but as a fan and potential customer is makes me think that they are afraid of competition. Rather than inviting them in then smacking then around showing why they are better then all the other energy drinks they just chase them off. Now granted its also an ad in the program, a bit less of a sin. If they disallow current or future energy drinks from competing then its a bad move.

From the NHRA's standpoint. You get one sponsor but to do so you have to alienate other current and potential sponsors. Unless they are getting a huge amount of money it doens't seem like the best move for the sport. Maybe for NHRA but not for the teams and sport.

I am not a nascar fan but I will not own a sprint phone after all the crap they pulled over there.

As for getting an extension, that sounds great on paper but the important question is how much paper is nhra getting for that extension.

........I am not a nascar fan but I will not own a sprint phone after all the crap they pulled over there........
pj, that's my point. nascar has a few more dollars to play with and a track
record of proven success. sprint(nextel) paid big bucks for the rite to step
on a few toes and in return the name 'sprint' is read, seen and heard by
millions of fans.
coca-cola, on the other hand is paying a fraction of what sprint pays,
and in return pays for the rite to step on a few toes in NHRA drag racing?
there name 'full throttle is read, seen and heard by thousands of fans.

i suppose if you own the rites to many smaller series, such as NHRA, it
all adds up eventually.

seems to stink but NHRA does need a sponsor to keep the show going. who else is out there to step up with the economy skidding? I personaly think a battle between the energy drinks could improve the younger crowd attendance at races if NHRA would advertise it, plus plug the other sponsors also in newspaper, radio,or what ever. anyone remember Steve Evans it's going to look like a FIBERGLASS FOREST at the drag strip this saturday

The energy drink wars would be good. Heck I remember in nascar their was some deal where Coke/Pepsi rivalry one Pop company sposnored something but if the other Pops cars won they wouldn't drink the cup or wear the hat. I don't remember exactly BUT it created press and controversy to the point where a guy like me who doesn't follow that sport remembers it.

Now if a rockstar, monster, red bull, viva vegas, Full throttle type of battle would start it would create a buzz for each of them, more so than locking the competition out

i agree.

so let's say you own a huge car dealership and sell one brand of car......
you don't want any competition nearby so you buy the all the land
1 mile in either direction of your company on both sides of the highway.
you sell a lot of cars because you're well known and you spend money
advertising your business to bring people in to buy cars.
the problem is there are many brands of cars and you cannot expect all
the people to only like your brand.
so people start shopping for cars just down the road where there are many
dealers right next to each other along the road. they continue to shop for
vehicles in this area because of the variety of selection in one area.
pretty soon they are not driving to your dealership anymore

Rex I know that was a joke. But it amazes me how NHRA continues to cut it's own throat.

Seriously, we both do not know how this will pan out.

As with everything else in life I will wait then act..........did not say how long, however everything more or less deserves the benefit of the doubt.

A lot of times knee jerk reacting serves no useful good. because it is not thought out and based on emotion, not logic.

You have a conservative view, and I know you know what I am saying.

As far as NHRA Drag Racing, it is not a mainstream sport.

Sadly, but that is a fact.

I do not think there is a lot of a throat to cut.

Even if you constantly try to screw everything up, you will eventually get something right, even if by error.

We will know by next year the full effect.

Probably the best thing for the sport was Winston, but times, they are a changin'.

My judgement is to wait, there might be something out there that completely revolutionizes the sport, but I think by now it will be quite by accident.

The sad thing about this...is.. the Energy Drink market today is close to what the "DOT COM" boom era was in the 90's... tons of money to toss around no matter what the economy..... and this will limit a large portion of possible funds for teams....

maybe the NHRA will boost the payouts to make up the limited outlet for sponsrships now..but then again.. i don't see any of the heads cutting their bonus'...do you.....lol
