Four-Wide It still stinks

Muddy

Watched a few minutes of 4-wide. It's as bad as I remember. Bad in person and worse on television. Even the web site can't handle it well. This should be the last year. JMO

Totally agree, John. No, I haven't seen it live yet, and I don't plan to. It belongs at an independent match race track, not in NHRA competition.

I just looked at first round results on Drag Race central. I can't figure out who the winners are. Seems like a cluster to me.

Ya'll don't lak the double wad trailer trash nationals? at Z max? thats a shame, then you won't be at the blue collar comedy reunion next week either?

You might NOT be a Redneck.

It may not be for everyone, but neither is NASCAR. As for me... we've all seen single runs. Double that and it's much better, GREAT. Now double that again, whats not to like.

Its just more of the we don't have a clue how to run a racing series so lets do this, because the guy who owns the track said he likes it, and He will have a fit if we don't, NHRA politics.

Think I caught this right as the Survivors...

Everybody I have spoke to who has seen it live loves it, just wish we had more cars than just 4-5 laps per class!

Except for all the ticket buying spectators who stopped attending the event after the novelty/side show factor wore off.

The only thing that will end the 4-Wipe madness is diminished spectator ticket sales - when O. Bruton Smith must explain his decisions and expenditures to Speedway Motorsports, Inc. Stockholders. ;)

Working hard to avoid spoilers here, but some interesting notes.

Someone in PS made it to the final going 30mph. Of the 8 cars in the two PS semi-final quads, only three cars made clean, full pulls. Half of the pro stock field didn't make it down the track in the final quad.

The funny car runner up had lights that started with a 1 all day, and still came in second. Of the seven quads that ran today, only one funny car made it down lane four with a clean, full pull. (Oops, that last one is wrong. Read the confusing stats incorrectly...)

4-weird is right...

Been watching NHRA Drag Racing since the 1987 Winternationals. Watched pretty much every event on ESPN, TNN etc for the past 26 years. The only ones I have missed have been...

1. When I was in boot camp
2. When I was on my honeymoon
3. And when the 4 wide nationals became a regular event.

So, there you go.

Add me to this camp. It's different. It's fun and it makes Charlotte a unique event on the tour. Nothing wrong with that at all.

I like the 4-wide...Since I got ESPN3 I haven't been this productive on a race weekend in forever

but ya, if they ABSOLUTLY have to have a 4-wide race it should be an all-star type non-points race

Terrible to watch, too much going on, too much to process, too much to interpret.

That said, I want to see one session of four wide fuel cars, then they can quit and go back to what Drag Racing is all about... one on one!

I've just finished another weekend at the Bruton Smith Nationals, and every year I find another reason not to like it. This year, the #1 and #16 qualifiers in FC and PSB both go to the second round. Sorry folks, that's just not right in my book. And before anyone asks why I keep coming back, my opportunities for drag racing are limited, and ZMax is the closest track to me. It's fast, it's loud, it gives us a weekend in the RV, and the facility is second to none, but 4 wide just doesn't cut it for me. 20 minutes per pro class in qualifying and it's over, with no oildowns or other delays. 3 rounds on Sunday. I kind of feel like I'm not really getting my money's worth compared to a traditional track. 4 wide is just a gimmick, that's all it was intended to be, since nowhere else can do it. I just wish it would run it's course and be over.

I have an acquaintance that does announcing duties at the speedway and the drag strip. His job is to interact with the fans. He asked a lot of fans what they think of 4 wide eliminations, and according to him, the vast majority don't like it. OK for qualifying, but not on Sunday. Kind of like this forum, a few that like it, most have no use for it.
