To keep it simple, people don't know what 400hp or higher actually is like until they experience it firsthand.

A guy I used to work with had a friend who worked at a Chevy dealer. While there he saw a guy taking delivery of a new Lingenfelter Corvette. Apparently the dude came into money and wanted a weekend car.

A week later, the car came back on a flatbed - totaled. Apparently the guy lost control and wrapped it around a tree. Seems like the guy was unprepared to go from a 4 cylinder work beater to a 600+ HP 'Vette.

Over the years, I've had occasional offers to take someone's high HP car "for a spin." In all but one case, I've turned them down. Usually much to the owner's surprise. Why? For this very reason. I'm afraid I'll do something stupid and wreck the thing.

The one exception was a good freind's '64 Buick Skylark convert with a 455/5 speed. I had given him quite a bit of help with the resto, and it's much like my own car, so I felt right at home in it.

back in the late 60's early 70's I saw a lot of nice muscle cars wrapped around poles by guys coming back from the Army. You gotta respect the power.
