September 26, 2001 - Ari Fleischer, in response to criticism by comedian Bill Maher:

"I'm aware of the press reports about what he said. I have not seen the actual transcript of the show itself. But assuming the press reports are right, it's a terrible thing to say, and it unfortunate. And that's why -- there was an earlier question about has the President said anything to people in his own party -- they're reminders to all Americans that they need to watch what they say, watch what they do. This is not a time for remarks like that; there never is. "

Full quote of Fleischer, and the original presser question:

"Q As Commander-In-Chief, what was the President's reaction to television's Bill Maher, in his announcement that members of our Armed Forces who deal with missiles are cowards, while the armed terrorists who killed 6,000 unarmed are not cowards, for which Maher was briefly moved off a Washington television station?

MR. FLEISCHER: I have not discussed it with the President, one. I have --

Q Surely, as a --

MR. FLEISCHER: I'm getting there.

Q Surely as Commander, he was enraged at that, wasn't he?

MR. FLEISCHER: I'm getting there, Les.

Q Okay.

MR. FLEISCHER: I'm aware of the press reports about what he said. "

Are you sure you actually want to use this quote as an arguement that the administration was mandating that criticism of the President would not be tolerated???

Maher wasn't even talking about the President per se; rather he was slamming our countries policies, and our troops. Maher was run off the air for a short time by market forces, due to his own controversial comment, not some malevolent act of the President, which is what you seem to be implying.

Fleischer's response indicated that the President was rather upset about the Maher comment, and was REMINDING (not mandating, not dictating, not trying to legislate) the American people that this was a time to stay together as a country, and to set aside the normal politics. (the waters edge)

Even the questioner at the presser seemed to understand the anger.

He//, I was p/ssed off about Maher's comment as well. We had just been attacked, and our country was in the process of formulating a response. We were expecting more attacks here at home, and then some hateful, anti-American Hollywood clown like Maher has the audacity to make a comment like that, during those very first days after the 9/11 attacks?

Last I heard, Maher was still on TV. The First Ammendment still works, and is in no danger.

Too many people seem to think that freedom of speech means that everyone else has to agree with what you have to say. Actually, freedom of speech means that I can disagree with what you have to say, or you me, but we won't try to shut each other up. You know, like the far left tries to do to those they don't agree with.

Get ALL ideas out in the open, and the masses will decide those they wish to support.

Now, back to drag rcaing! :D
