[coverattach=1]Qualifying for the Auto Club NHRA Finals, the final race of the 2009 Full Throttle Drag Racing season got underway with a single session on Thursday, with 23 cars looking to take their first step towards securing a spot in Sunday’s final eliminations field. Just as he has all season, Summit Racing driver Greg Anderson was among the leaders, with his 6.647-second time placing him second with three attempts remaining.

However, all was not right in the KB Racing camp, as Anderson’s 206.20 mph top speed was not up to his typical performance. In discussing the run afterwards, the three-time champion confirmed that he had encountered mechanical issues in the latter part of the run, which the team immediately started working to resolve in time for tomorrow’s second session.

“We were on a great run until we had some technical difficulties at the top end,” said Anderson. “Other than that, our Summit Racing Pontiac was decent, and probably would have run a 6.62 if it had made it all the way down the track under power. As expected, the track was still a little green, and apparently we did a little better job than most of the other cars in adapting to the first part of the track, because we were quicker than they were in the first part of the track, so we have to make sure to find a way to stay as good when conditions change, so we can stay ahead of the pack.

“Overall, I’d say we’re mildly pleased, but still have some work to do, including figuring out why my car is running so much better than the other two (teammate Jason Line and brother-in-law Ronnie Humphrey, who is leasing the Summit Pontiac Anderson used earlier in the year.) That’s our project for the next two days as we get ready for race day – making sure all three Summit Pontiacs are performing to their full potential.”
