In the semis of the 81 Sportsnationals, we had trouble with some bolts in the bellhousing inspection plate. Our opponent Don Geradot bought us some time by acting like he had some trouble too. We rewarded him by redlighting (unintentional) but appreciated his sportsmanship. In our case their was only a round and a half left (only six classes) and no live TV so the NHRA officials could spare a few minutes. In Cruz's case, NHRA would have had to let him make a single Q run (in a 4w race) and as Randy said; open a can of worms.

Your football comparison doesn't work. This was qualifying / practice if you will. Had this been during eliminations, yes, not ready, when the fire up signal is given, Creasy gets a bye . But during a Q session, what would it have hurt to let him make his pass ??

Actually it does work. Practice would be if they were up for a test and tune time trial, couldn't start and waited a pair.
Qualifying is part of the race. You have to be ready to start when given the signal. Cruz wasn't and the proper rules were followed.

Qualifying and practice are completely different things. Practice doesn't officially count. Qualifying does.
The rules are the same for qualifying as racing. The fact is, It was time to start the car, Cruz wasn't ready so he didn't get the run.

years ago you could try to qualify all day long as long as you got in line. There was always fights to get in line so NHRA quit doing it. Everybody gets the same shot.

I went to Winternationals in 76 and i remember an Alcohol Funny Car made a pass and drove in front of stands and back in line before shutting car, the fans went crazy, wish i remember who it was.

Back in the day we would make a pass and push back in line and service our car while waiting in line. It was brutal at Indy

Qualifying is not part of the race. How well, or poor you qualify has no outcome on who wins the race.

If you don't qualify it will damn sure make it hard to win the race.
A qualifying run is an official run, a practice run is not. Practice runs don't count for records, or career bests, or anything. They are practice. If you hit 20 home runs in batting practice they don't count. If you strike out 20 times in batting practice that doesn't count either. An official run has to be made during the event, when it's your time to run. If you're not ready, you don't run.

That was a huge "Oops!". It's pretty rare for him to make a mistake like that.

What amazes me most is this discussion is still going on... It seems like most of the people who are posting have been NHRA fans for a long long time and posted on nitromater for a long long time... Long enough you'd almost consider them diehards of the sport. (Aside from the ones who actually race or work in the sport.) How do you not know how the game is played by now? Never in the history of the sport has someone gotten a run out of turn because they simply weren't ready.

"Hey Harold! Get on the radio and tell Graham since this is just a qualifying run I need to finish my sandwich before I put my helmet on."

"Good luck with that!"....Harold.

I agree with this in every way. Cruz was NOT cheated, hell, he didn't even complain.
