Love the pics of Grump's car. I didn't realize they were already hiding the intake manifold designs with tape, etc. even way back then.
Heck I remember Glidden crashing at Atlanta he crawled the car through his jacket over intake before safari got to him. These guys didn't want anyone seeing their intake.

The Grump was probably the first to start covering his stuff, although that shot looks like carbs are just sitting on top of a too-tall box (see the size of his scoop in the other pics?) He was known for leading people astray with what was called "spoof of engineering espionage"

I remember when Glidden threw his jacket and helmet on top of his stuff:

and anyone remember Bernstein's and AA Dale's Terrible Towel?

it covered a experimental high speed lean out system, but was worth more as a psych-out to the competition

I always wondered what was under that towel

I forgot Lee Beard came up with the actual "Terrible Towel" when he put one on the accelerator pedal on Gary Ormsby's TF when he had a string of great reaction times, just to fool with the other racers. Dale's towel came later, with that great question mark on it. It covered an air operated lean out system that opened up a jet at about 3.6 seconds into the run.
Dale had a lot of tricks, like using a kickdown switch from a junkyard GTO hooked to the shifter and to a light bulb on the back of Kenny's FC to find out KB was shifting right after launch, not where he needed to.....sort of a lie-detector system!

When to a Gathering of the Geezers yesterday and the Food & Gas Championship put on by Don "The Wavemaker" Prieto and got this shot of Dave "Big Mac" McClelland signing a jacket as Ed Iskenderian looks on. These are great fun and i get to hang out with some true legends. Unfortunately, the party gets smaller every year.

That awesome , bet there are some great stories being told at that gathering. Thanks Gino

In deed there were. As I mentioned to my cousin Don, "I wonder if these guys grand kids have any idea what their granddad did for fun."

BTW, I took this photo of a poster on the wall at Prieto's of Lions in the early days.

Going through an old box of photos, I came across this one in one of Ivo's promo packets.
