I know what ya mean. I've been fortunate enough to be at several "history making" moments in our sport. (and one near miss, doesn't count)
I'll never forget.

Makes me think of the folks that saw "THE RUN" live. They'll never forget either.

If I recall they all but had Kalitta's name ingraved on the trophy, the only one with any chance
to catch him was Tony Schumacher. BUT he needed Kalitta to go out early, (unlikely but happened). Then he (Tony) also needed to do everything. Tony had to: win every rd,
win the final, set a record, back up the record, walk the dog , and take out the trash. (LOL)................. and he DID.

Formula 1 had Hamilton stealing the championship from Massa by 1 point in the final race in 2008, even though Massa won the race.

I was rooting for Alan Kulwicki when he won the 1992 NASCAR championship against Bill Elliot by 1 lap and 10 points, even though Elliot won the race.

I really felt bad for Kalitta (and probably yelled out loud the words he appeared to mouth when the time came up on the scoreboard), but it was good for drag racing to have that happen. The winner of the race won the championship- just as it should be when points are that tight...

I was 1 year old when this iconic scene happened at Indy -

Big's interview on ESPN2 about how Pat made him stick with the rear engine car when he was about to drop it had me tearing up again...
