There's a difference between other series events and payouts and NHRA. At a NASCAR race or whatever you have one winner, one second place, etc. At an NHRA race, Pomona for example, you have 12 different winners in 12 different categories. And every one of them expects to get paid, as do the 12 runner-ups, and dozens of round winners. The money available for a purse gets spread pretty thin.

What happened to the contingency payout list that they published in National Dragster? The Sportsman classes depend on that as an additional payout if you won, runner-upped, etc. actually the payout is greater than the NHRA payout if you had enough stickers on your car.

The days of racing and surviving off of prize money alone are long gone and have been that way for many decades and it does not matter whether it is drag racing, NASCAR, dirt racing, karting etc. Last month I spent back to back weekends at Cocopah Speedway outside of Yuma for the IMCA Winternationals. It was 7 nights of racing and in the modifieds it paid $1,000 to win. One guy, Ethan Dotson, won five of the seven nights so he won $5,000 plus a $2,000 bonus for winning five of seven races. I can imagine after calculating travel expenses (from Bakersfield to Yuma) parts and pieces, not to mention tires and race fuel he barely broke even and thats before him cooking an engine on the last night. The only thing prize money makes a difference anymore is whether or not you get to eat pb&j or cheeseburger or steak after the race.

Anyone that gets into racing competitively in NHRA to make a living needs to cr@p in one hand and wish in the other, because it’s not going to happen on your own dime.
Major sponsorship to cover expenses and put a little extra in your pocket gets you close to a profit for the year. That’s it.
Most racers I know ONLY races for the love of doing it. Personally, I spent 2k before leaving my driveway to haul 800 miles to run for a position in the Jegs All Stars, a Division points standings, event trophy and the 1200 winners purse. I lost 1st round and was only upset I didn’t move up in points.
$500 more to get home.
As for the big $$& bracket races, there are only a few people that consistently finish in the money rounds and can eek out a living doing it, but without sponsor help, again they would be working with in a deficit.

Sorry for the rambling, but most people think there a ton of money being handed out and it’s just not true.

What are the total payouts for these races, due first round heat losers get paid?

i realize the numbers everyone wants to know probably won't get published, but what is the presenting sponsor (if there is one) responsible for?
why not take a little of whatever that's worth, add it to the CW money, and get the payouts back to where they were?
