ChampCar downtown Las Vegas April 6th-8th (1 Viewer)

If they want to improve downtown, they need to get rid of all the drug dealers and hookers down there first... what a disgrace.
Bingo! I like downtown, have stayed there about a dozen times. But, when the difference between safe and unsafe is a short city block, the problem isn't in the core area, it's a block away from the core area. Fremont Street is policed pretty good. ...good enough to make it safe most of the time (no place is safe all of the time). I used to park in the city garage when just visiting downtown for a half day. Not now. I've walked from the Strat to the Plaza on Main, during the day. I'd consider it again during the day, but there's no way I'd take that walk at night. Constructing a temporary road racing course in this area wouldn't clean it up. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

In case you were wondering, I've visited your town close to 100 times -- it's been my favorite getaway place for 30 years. I've stayed at 25 different (at last count) casino/hotels. While that doesn't give me the same credentials to comment on Las Vegas as someone who lives there, I have a pretty good feel for it. ;)

Bob,

I wasn't suggesting they race on the oval at LVMS. In fact, that's the last thing I pay to watch! A road course on the roads at LVMS could be both fun to watch and involve some high speed action. The timing of the event would virtually eliminate using the drag strip as part of the course, but if you take a look at the entire facility, it would be excellent place to set up a major road race.

interesting. I haven't been there but I'll take your word for it!Are you saying spectators would be able to see the road race from the stands used for the drag race a la sonoma?

The scariest area of Vegas in My Opinion is the area by the Baseball stadium where the 51's play! I took that Neon boneyard tour back in the Spring, while waiting for the guide to show up I got hit up for spare change 3 times! Just next door to the boneyard on LV blvd. was an apartment complex that was Boarded up from a Meth fire! I guess there's a reason most tourists stay South of Sahara blvd.

You are spot on Bob, and even though I live in Vegas... you could probably tell me thing or two about downtown. I would love to go down there more often, so would my kids, but driving there, we often pass or go through areas with all these shady people. I don't want to see that and certainly don't want my kids seeing it ------ stopping at a stoplight in certain areas sometimes you might have to worry about a drug dealer or prostitue approaching your car?
You're right about Fremont Street, it's a decent area, security and police presence is pretty good for a few blocks, but once you cross LV Blvd. going south, things literally go south. I remember when they first conceived the Fremont Street Expereince, they mentioned cleaning up downtown... which meant cleaning up 3 blocks only apparently! They need to clean up that entire area ---- from the Stratsophere on down. I wonder where those pimps will be during ChampCar? Maybe a few will get run over!

Sorry for the rant.

Yep, that's not where you want to go hang out. They've talked about another baseball park forever around here. If they ever did move & changed the teams name I might go to a few games. "The 51's??" That is so Broke Back Moutain!!!
I've never been to the Neon boneyard Joe, I remember your pics and I might have to visit. I'll take my boxing gloves with me.:p
