Steven Reed has come away from Willowbank Raceways Nightfire Spectacular with a Quarter-Final result in his bid for the 2007/2008 Australian Top Alcohol Championship after a rain affected Round 5 of the National Series on the weekend (4th–5th January).
The entire first day of the scheduled two day event had to be cancelled due to inclement weather and a revised format was devised for the second day that included two Qualifiers followed by the Elimination Rounds.
Despite no rain on day 2, the hot and humid conditions were still far from ideal for racing and after the first round of Qualifying on Saturday morning very few cars in the Top Alcohol field had got down the track in a competitive time.
Steven also had issues with a broken sprag in the transmission of his 3500 horsepower Camaro Funny Car before eventually being seeded in 7th position after his second run.
With a Quarter-Final match up against current Championship leader Brett Stevens, Steven knew he had to set his beast up with an aggressive tune and the result was a great race as the 2 cars stayed glued together side by side to half track before Brett managed to just pull away in the second half of the race track.
“In my first qualifier I had all sorts of problems, I shook the tyres hard off the start line and then when I tried to regather the car I broke a sprag in the transmission so that run was lost,” Steven Reed said.
“We then again had some tyre shake in the second qualifier as we tried to come to terms with the hot and sticky weather conditions that were hampering all of the teams, and with no third run scheduled due to the over night rain we were stuck in 7th spot.”
“This meant I was up against current series leader Brett Stevens in the Quarter-Finals, so we really had to set the car to kill as we knew he wasn’t going to be holding back either.”
“I got a good jump on him at the lights as well and we were level pegging most of the first half of the race track, but I shook the tyres slightly at around 600 ft and it was enough for him to get away for the win.”
“By getting the Quarter-Final points though I have kept a position inside the top 5 in the National Series, and with 2nd through to 5th only separated by just over 100 points, there are still plenty of opportunities to move up the ladder with three rounds remaining in the Championship.”
The Reed Racing team will next be taking to the track for the 6th Round of the Australian Top Alcohol Championship at the Western Sydney International Dragway, New South Wales from the 15th-16th February.
