BRANDON BERNSTEIN HOPING FOR SOLID PERFORMANCE AT ATLANTA TO DEFEND TOP FUEL EVENT TITLE

ATLANTA – During the Civil War, Atlanta was the target of a major Union invasion, and the scene of several battles. On April 25, the NHRA contingent will wage their own battle at Atlanta Dragway known as the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals.

Brandon Bernstein, driver of the Budweiser/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster owned by his father Kenny, will set out to defend last year’s Top Fuel event title.

“We would sure like to repeat our win,” said Bernstein. “Last year this was the second victory in a row for our team and after we won Atlanta we took over the Top Fuel point lead. This year, we’d like to use Atlanta to kick-start some notches on the season’s win list.”

Bernstein was runner-up at Gainesville , Fla. in March and made a final four showing at Las Vegas , the race preceding the Atlanta Dragway event.

“We’ve got a good car right now,” said Bernstein, “and I think Tim (Richards, crew chief)

is especially good with hot, tricky tracks. This race track has an entirely new surface and so the crew chiefs will be under the gun to make a quick read on what they think the track can hold in terms of a tune-up. It’s possible that past data and history in the crew chief tune-up books won’t be applicable to the new surface. It should be a very good race for the fans and may hold a lot of surprises.”

Bernstein heads into the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals fifth in Top Fuel point standings.

“The point standings are tight enough that you can take a big slide or make a big jump in positions in one weekend’s worth of racing,” said Bernstein. “It’s important to stay in the top 10 to have a chance for a run at the Countdown to the Championship. We need a good, solid performance at Atlanta .”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying is scheduled to begin Friday, April 25 at 3 p.m. with a second session at 6:30 p.m. There are two qualifying sessions Saturday, 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., with final eliminations set to begin Sunday at 11 a.m.

Brandon Bernstein took the reins to the Budweiser/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster from his father, Kenny, whose 39 Top Fuel victories and 30 Funny Car victories make him No. 2 driver on the career nitro win list. Brandon was named Southern California Auto Club Rookie of the Year in 2003, and has amassed 17 career victories to date including a career-high five wins and a third-place overall finish in the 2007 NHRA POWERAde Series.

Just like the Bernstein family legacy on the track, Budweiser American-style lager follows the same family recipe used by five generations of Busch family brew masters. Brewed with only the finest hand-selected ingredients and Beechwood aged for the perfect balance of flavor and refreshment, Budweiser is “the Great American Lager.”
