KENNY BERNSTEIN HOPING TO CONTINUE CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE IN ATLANTA

COMMERCE, Ga. – Six-time NHRA champion Kenny Bernstein is a four-time Atlanta Dragway winner. He was victorious in 1985 and 1987 in his Funny Car hey day, and he drove to victory in the Top Fuel category in 1991 and 1997.

Bernstein is back in black this season piloting the Monster Energy/Lucas Oil Funny Car and looking for a good showing at the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals April 27-29.

To date, Bernstein has competed in 431 NHRA national events and is looking toward his 671st round win in Atlanta .

“Prior to the third event of the season at Gainesville , Fla. , we hired Jimmy Walsh as crew chief and Danny DeGennaro as assistant crew chief,” said Bernstein. “We have made steady progress in the performance of the race car at each event since then.

“Make no mistake. The Funny Car competitors are all strong out there and at every final qualifying session this year, it’s been a nail-biter with big names in, out, and sometimes back in again.

It’s pretty traumatic, but it certainly is a crowd-pleaser and keeps the fans on the edge of their seats.

“The drivers and crew chiefs are under a lot of pressure because there are so many strong performers in this category.

“We are currently 27 points, or just a round and a handful of qualifying points, away from breaking into the field for the countdown to eight. The field is actually set 12 events down the road, but you want to get seeded into the field early and burrow in. There is a new championship chase format this year and you can understand by the description of final qualifying rounds how much of a dogfight this really is.

“In Las Vegas we were running consistent numbers, so knock on wood, we hope to be able to continue in that vein. Consistency will win rounds and races.”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying for the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals begins Friday, April 27 at 4:30 p.m. with a second session at 7:30 p.m. There are two qualifying rounds Saturday, 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. , with final eliminations scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Sunday.
