KENNY BERNSTEIN CREDITS TEAM WORK FOR MONSTER ENERGY/LUCAS OIL FUNNY CAR PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT

BAYTOWN, Texas – Kenny Bernstein had his best showing of the season at the ACDelco Gatornationals March 18 making a semifinals appearance, the third race of the 23-event NHRA series. Bernstein credits crew chief Jimmy Walsh and right hand man Danny DeGennaro, who he hired prior to that event, with the upswing in the performance of the Monster Energy/Lucas Oil Funny Car.

Bernstein is eagerly anticipating the O’Reilly Spring Nationals March 30-April 1 at Houston Raceway Park .

“Jimmy and Danny came onboard two weeks before the event at Gainesville Raceway,” explained Bernstein. “In that short time they swept the parts inventory, did maintenance and rebuilt many of the parts, before heading for a few days of testing in Valdosta , Ga. Then we went from testing right into competition. These guys worked around the clock literally, along with the original members of the team who went 90 days without a break, to get this car figured out.

“With the assistance of two Mopar aerodynamicists we were able to get to the final four on Sunday. That was huge for us, and we’re optimistic that we will continue to improve.

“Budweiser/Lucas Oil crew chief Tim Richards and his wife, Kim, were instrumental in helping us obtain Jimmy and Danny, and there’s a great working relationship between the two teams. In fact the dragster team pitched in and helped with maintenance of the Funny Car parts during that short period of time and they helped us on race day when we need extra arms and hands between rounds.”

Bernstein last drove in 2003, substituting for his son Brandon in the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster, following a racing injury in the eighth race of the season, which sidelined Brandon for the remainder of that year.

This year six-time champion Kenny Bernstein began a three-year stint behind the wheel of the Monster Energy/Lucas Oil Funny Car.

“The racing season continues,” said Bernstein, “but our thoughts and prayers are for the recovery of Eric Medlen who was critically injured in a testing accident at Gainesville Raceway Monday, March 19. “We have a heavy heart for his father John, team owner John Force and his entire organization. We stand by to lend support or do anything we can to help the family and Eric’s extended family, his race team. We ask everyone to say a prayer for Eric.”

Nitro (Funny Car and Top Fuel) qualifying begins Friday, March 20 at 4 p.m. with a second session at 7 p.m. There are two qualifying rounds Saturday, noon and 3 p.m. , with final eliminations beginning Sunday, April 1 at 11 a.m.
